The American tenor, Karl Dan Sorensen, had given up the idea of becoming a professional singer by the time he came to Boston, in 1954, to study psychology and work in a mental-health clinic. Nevertheless, he became one of the founding members of the Cantata Singers and tenor soloist for 17 seasons, and throughout the 1960's and 1970's, he was one of the most esteemed musicians in Boston, while maintaining a full-time professional career in mental-health. For nearly two decades, he was the voice of J.S. Bach's Evangelist in Boston. No one who heard his numerous performances of the Passions and Cantatas will forget his luminous tone, transparent diction and depth of spiritual expression.
In 1982, Karl Dan Sorensen quietly retired from singing because of other personal and career priorities. In 1989-1990 seasaon, however, he could be seen standing among the tenors of the chorus in concerts by the Cantata Singers. |
