Julia Snowden (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: June 1, ____ - West Newbury, Massachusetts, USA

The American mezzo-soprano, Julia Snowden, studied at Pentucket Regional Senior High in West Newbury, Massachusetts (1998-2003). She attended the prestigious Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University in Bloomington, where she studied with Mary Ann Hart and Dr. Brian Horne, and obtained her Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance (2004-2008) and her Master of Music degree in Voice Performance (2008-2010). Active with Indiana University Opera Theater throughout her time in Bloomington, she appeared in the 2007 world premiere of Ned Rorem's Our Town and went on to perform several roles including Giovanna in Rigoletto, Dorotheé in Cendrillon and Suzy in La Rondine. Now a resident of New York, she was recently chosen as a national semi-finalist in the New York Lyric Opera 2014 Competition. She currently studies with soprano Andrea Delgiudice.

Julia Snowden is an East Coast-based performer, whose reputation for a broad acting range and fine musicianship are finding her in increasingly exciting artistic venues across the USA. She was selected as a Super Finalist in the Connecticut Concert Opera's 2015 American Opera Idol Competition in July. In May, she joined the Center for Contemporary Opera in New York City for Falling Angel, a new work by composer J. Mark Scearce. Earlier this year, she was selected as a 2015 Gate City Bank Young Artist with Fargo-Moorhead Opera and appeared as the Marquise de Birkenfeld in their April, 2015 production of La fille du Régiment.

Julia Snowden has performed with a multitude of companies, including the Sugar Creek Festival, Brevard Music Center, Green Mountain Opera Festival, Opera in the Ozarks, Dicapo Opera Theatre, and the New York Lyric Opera. In her hometown of Boston, she has worked with MetroWest Opera and Boston Opera Collaborative, most notably in the latter's acclaimed New England premiere of Jake Heggie's Dead Man Walking. She has also been an active member of the professional ensemble of the Boston Lyric Opera, performing in their recent productions of W.A. Mozart's The Magic Flute, The Flying Dutchman, and Madama Butterfly.

Notable recent roles include Dorabella in W.A. Mozart's Così fan tutte (New York Lyric Opera, 2014), Kate Pinkterton in Madama Butterfly (Dicapo Opera Theatre, 2014), Giovanna in Rigoletto (Dicapo Opera Theatre, 2013), Loma Williams in Cold Sassy Tree (Sugar Creek Festival, 2013), Florence in Benjamin Britten's Albert Herring (Green Mountain Opera Festival, 2013), Buttercup in H.M.S. Pinafore (Brevard Music Center, 2012), Flora in La Traviata (Amore Opera, 2012), and Meg in Little Women (Sugar Creek Festival. 2011).
