The Polish tenor, Sylwester Smulczyński, graduated in 2006 from the Department of Vocal and Acting Studies at the Grażyna and Kiejstut Bacewicz Academy of Music in Łódź, Professor Piotr Miciński’s class. He further perfected his vocal skills at the Baroque music interpretation course taught by Paul Esswood in Florence and during master-courses with Professor Jerzy Artysz.
Already during his studies, Sylwester Smulczyński had an opportunity to take part in the international project Opera Island in Norway, where he appeared in G. Verdi’s La traviata directed by J. Miller. As a student, he also made his debut as Count Almaviva in Rossini’s The Barber of Seville during a European tour with the Lublin Music Theatre. Between 2006 and 2017 he was a soloist at the Warsaw Chamber Opera, where he made his debut as Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore by G. Donizetti. With the artists from this opera theatre, he appeared on many European opera stages, e.g. in Germany, Switzerland, France, or Spain. He has made guest appearances on stages of the Grand Theatre in Łódź, the Wrocław Opera House, the Opera Nova in Bydgoszcz, the Opera at the Castle in Szczecin, the Cracow Opera, and the Music Theatre in Lublin.
Sylwester Smulczyński participated in many music festivals, such as the “Warsaw Autumn” International Festival of Contemporary Music, the Iubilaei Cantus Music Festival in Nowy Sącz, the Viva il canto International Vocal Music Festival, the Chopin in the Colours of Autumn - International Festival in Antonin.
Sylwester Smulczyński's repertoire includes many solo parts from the works of W.A. Mozart, G. Rossini, G. Donizetti, G. Verdi, Benjamin Britten, and Igor Stravinsky. His most important scenic performances are his aforementioned debuts as Almaviva in Rossini’s The Barber of Seville and Nemorino in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore, as well as Tom Rakewell in I. Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress. Also prominent are his leading roles in numerous operas by W.A. Mozart (Belmonte in The Abduction from the Seraglio, Ferrando in Cosi fan tutte, or Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni). He also performs oratorios and cantatas from the repertoire of J.S. Bach, George Frideric Handel, J. Haydn, W.A. Mozart, and G. Rossini, as well as broadly understood vocal literature. The artist is particularly fond of performing Evangelists’ parts in J.S. Bach’s works.
Sylwester Smulczyński has performed under the baton of acclaimed conductors, such as Benjamin Bayl, Tomasz Bugaj, Kai Bumann, Massimiliano Caldi, Igor Dohovic, Zbigniew Graca, Christopher Hogwood, Vladimir Kiradjiew, Paweł Kotla, Charles Olivieri-Munroe, Helmuth Rilling, Wojciech Rodek, Eraldo Salmieri, Ruben Silva, Marc Soustrot, Lucas Vis, Marco Vitale, and collaborated with many outstanding directors, including Natalia Babińska, Tomasz Konina, Jonathan Miller, Walter Neiva, Maciej Prus, Jitka Stokalska, Marek Weiss.
Sylwester Smulczyński has recorded for the Polish Radio, the Fryderyk Chopin Institute, and many other cultural institutions. Since 2017 he has been a soloist in the Polish Royal Opera. |
