Slovak Philharmonic Choir (Choir)

Founded: 1946 - Slovakia

The Slovak Philharmonic Chorus has its origin in the Slovak Radio Chorus (mixed chorus of Radio Bratislava) started by Ladislav Slovák in 1946. Since then it has developed into a large professional independent concert ensemble with a considerable reputation both at home and abroad. The repertoire of the choir ranges from the Baroque to the contemporary, in opera, oratorio and other works. The Chorus, which appointed Jan Rozehnal as its Music Director in 1990, has performed with many distinguished orchestras and conductors, including Claudio Abbado, Lorin Maazel, Vaclav Talich and Yuri Temirkanov. The choir has made frequent guest appearances at major festivals in Austria, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Italy and elsewhere.

Recordings by the Chorus include the Oratorio, The Legend of St. Elisabeth by Franz Liszt for Hungaroton, which was awarded the Paris Grand Prix du Disque in 1974, and a number of works for Naxos and Marco Polo, including Ottorino Respighi's cantata La Primavera and opera La bella dormente nel bosco.
