The Canadian mezzo-soprano, stage director, producer and educator, Nina Scott-Stoddart, studied at York University (1987-1991), where she obtained her B.F.A., degree in Music.
Nina Scott-Stoddart began her career in 1991 as a mezzo-soprano chorister and soloist after graduating from York University. She has sung with many orchestras and opera companies, including Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, Opera Atelier, Pax Christi Chorale, Opera Maine, Toronto Operetta Theatre, Opera in Concert, the Kingston Symphony, International Chamber Music Festival in New Zealand, Opera Nova Scotia, Mahone Bay Concert Series, Essential Opera and the NS Gilbert and Sullivan Society. She has been recorded on the Naxos label and broadcast coast-to-coast on the CBC.
Since January 2000, Nina Scott-Stoddart is also active as a stage director. She was the co-founder and Atistic Director of Toronto's Opera Anonymous (May 1995-May 2002), which produced over 20 well-reviewed works in its eight year history. She also directed opera for a number of groups in Toronto.
Since moving to Lunenburg, Nova Scotia in 2002, Nina Scott-Stoddart has worked as Artistic Producer for ONS’s Opera Valentine for five years, founded in September 2003 Maritime Concert Opera, which is enjoying a successful eleventh season with over 21 productions to date. In July 2005, she co-founded the Halifax Summer Opera Festival (HSOF) and Workshop. For HSOF she has directed W.A. Mozart's Cosi fan tutte, Don Giovanni, George Frideric Handel's Giulio Cesare, Menotti's The Consul, Floyd's Susannah, Offenbach's Les contes d'Hoffmann, Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream and Sondheim's A Little Night Music, as well as overseeing all production details for all shows for the first seven years..
Nina Scott-Stoddart was the guest stage director for the Dalhousie University Opera Workshop for four years: including productions of Menotti's The Old Maid and the Thief and The Telephone, Strauss’s Die Fledermaus, Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld, Puccini's Gianni Schicchi and Mollicone’s Face on the Barroom Floor. She was the guest stage director for Acadia University's Singing Theatre Ensemble in 2012, directing You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. Between 2013 and 2015 she co-directed directed Dido and Aeneas and Gilbert and Sullivan's Iolanthe for the Yorkshire Opera Workshop in England and in 2014 Orpheus in the Underworld for HSOF!
Specialties: Nina Scott-Stoddart started out as a lyric mezzo, but would now describe herself as a dramatic mezzo with contralto tendencies. She has experience in early music as well as contemporary music, and in oratorio and art songs as well as opera. As a director she is comfortable working with students as well as pros. She also enjoy giving master-classes. |
