Maartje Rammeloo (Soprano)

Born: Geleen, The Netherlands

The Dutch soprano, Maartje Rammeloo, studied both classical singing as well as musical theatre at the Fontys Conservatorium in Tilburg where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in Classical Singing (2000-2006) and received her Master of Arts degree (cum laude) specializing in Operetta and Classical Musical Theatre (2006-2008). She took part in master-classes by Montserrat Caballé, Raul Gimenez, Elly Ameling, Bernarda Fink, and at the Salzburger Mozarteum with Edith Wiens (2009), among others. For over 5 years she studied with the world-renowned mezzo-soprano Jard van Nes. Nowadays, she works with American coaches Ira Siff and Roberta Alexander. She has succeeded in several competitions. She received the Staetshuys Fonds Prize at the International Vocal Competition in 's-Hertogenbosch and won the Jo Bollekamp Prize for most promising soloist during the Erna Spoorenberg Vocalist Presentation. After this she was prize-winner at the Hans Gabor Belvedère Competition and a finalist at the Montserrat Caballé Competition in Zaragoza and the Wilhelm Stenhammar Competition in Sweden.

Maartje Rammeloo is active as a freelance classical soprano since 2006. The versatile soprano is praised for her ability to combine warm, lyric lines with brilliant coloratura and an energetic stage presence. Having studied both classical singing as well as musical theatre she can connect both worlds with ease and specializes in cross over theatre and singing.

Maartje Rammeloo made her debut at the Dutch National Opera with the role of Prêtresse in Gluck's Iphigénie en Tauride, working with director Pierre Audi, conductor Marc Minkowski and Les Musiciens du Louvre. After which she was asked back to cover the title role of Lucia di Lammermoor working with conductor Carlo Rizzi and director Monique Wagemakers. In 2019 she returned to Amsterdam, performing Miss Hope in The boy who grew too fast by Menotti. Over the years, she has sung many opera roles in The Netherlands and abroad. Engagements including: Marzelline in L.v. Beethoven's Fidelio, Pamina in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Musetta in Puccini's La Bohème, Cunegonde in Leonard Bernstein's Candide, Lucy in Menotti's The Telephone, Adina in Donizetti's l’Elisir d’Amore and La Comtesse Adèle Rossini's Le Comte Ory (Bredase Opera, June 2017). She was part of several newly created operas, one of which is The Tsar, his wife her lover and his head, about Tsar Peter the Great, which played at several operafestivals and she toured Europe with the new creation ‘Be With Me Now’ which premiered at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence.

In addition to these opera roles, Maartje Rammeloo regularly performs as a soloist in concerts and oratorios, working with conductors such as Markus Stenz, Skip Sempé, Marc Albrecht, Jac van Steen, Tomáš Netopil, Anthony Hermus and James Gaffigan.

Coming seasons Maartje Rammeloo will be playing roles such as Liz Elliott in Kurt Weill’s Lady in the Dark (Opera Zuid) and Liz Henson in the world premiere of the opera Dogville (Aalto Theatre Essen) but she will also debut as First Lady in W.A. Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte and Dorella in Wagner’s Das Liebesverbot.

Maartje Rammeloo was also Singing Teacher at Fontys Hogescholen in Tilburg (September 2015-July 2019). On May 27, 2016, she married the Dutch tenor Jan-Willem Schaafsma; she currently lives in The Hague, the Netherlands.
