Sabina Puértolas (Soprano)

Born: Zaragoza, Spain

The Spanish soprano, Sabina Puértolas, began her studies for piano and singing at the High School of Music “Pablo Sarasate” in Pamplona. At the same period, she studied with Victoria de Los Angeles, Miguel Zanetti and Dafne Evangelatos. In 1993, she received a scholarship from the “Montserrat Caballé-Barnabé Marti” Foundation and, in 1994, a scholarship from the government in order to continue her studies at the Academia Chiggiana in Sienna (Italy) and at the Academia Verdiana in Busseto with Carlo Bergonzi as her professor. She sang her first opera La serve padrona in Pamplona and in Madrid. During 2003, she was a laureate at the Operalia-Domingo contest in in Frederikshaven and in Mainau and received the Zarzuela-prize; so got to sing at the final Gala with Plácido Domingo. She is the winner of other the international singing competitions: Riccardo Zandonai in Rovereto, Julián Gayarre in Pamplona, National Contest of Young Interpreters of Juventudes Musicales, Luis Mariano in Irun, Francisca Quart in Palma de Mallorca and Manuel Ausensi in Barcelona.

Sabina Puértolas made her professional debut in 2001, performing Oscar in Un ballo in maschera for La Scala, Milan. Opera engagements since include Musetta in La bohème for Arena di Verona, Gilda in Rigoletto for Angers-Nantes Opéra, Lucia di Lammermoor and Poppea in L’incoronazione di Poppea in Oviedo, Gilade in Farnace and Leocasta in Giustino for Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Minerva in Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria for Theater an der Wien, Drusilla in L’incoronazione di Poppea and Fiorilla in Il turco in Italia in Toulouse and for Theater an der Wien, Zerlina in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni for Dutch National Opera, Lisa in La sonnambula and Despina for Liceu, Barcelona, and Princesse Eudoxie in La Juive for Opéra de Lyon. She has also sung in Spain in Madrid (Teatro Real, Teatro de la Zarzuela), Pamplona (Baluarte, Teatro Gayarre), Valladolid, Jerez, Las Palmas, Tenerife, Bilbao (Euskalduna, Teatro Arriaga), and so on. Other roles have included: Rossina in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Lisette in La Rondine, Micaela in Georges Bizet's Carmen, Amina in La sonnambula. She has performed at the Zarzuela Luisa Fernanda, La Generala, and La del manojo de rosas, stage managed by Emilio Sagi. She has also sung in Marina, El asombro de Damasco and La Gran Vía. In 2001, she made her debut at Teatro alla Scala in Milan, under Maestro Riccardo Muti ‘s direction, performing Oscar in Un ballo in maschera. She has been conducted by Riccardo Muti, Alan Curtis, Christophe Rousset, Guingal, Jesús López-Cobos, Víctor Pablo, Gómez Martínez, Conti, Arrivabeni, Fogliani, among others.

In the oratorio field Sabina Puértolas has sung: George Frideric Handel’s Messiah with Ensemble Matheus and Jean-Christophe Spinosi; J.S. Bach's Magnificat (BWV 243), Weihnachts-Oratorium (BWV 248), and Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244); C. Orff's Carmina Burana, Stabat Mater by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi; Requiem and Coronation Mass by W.A. Mozart, Requiem by Gabriel Fauré. She has performed in Paris, London, Vienna, Washington, Liége, Bordeaux, Nantes, Veronna, Toulousse, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Tokyo, La Plata, and in theaters as An der Wien, Scala, Champs-Elysèes, Barbican, Royal Opera House.

Recent concerts have included Giovanni Battista Pergolesi's Stabat Mater and Haydn's Die Schöpfung, both with Christophe Rousset; Charles Gounod's Messe Solennelle de Saint-Cécile with the Orquesta Sinfónica de RTVE and Jesús López-Cobos; J.S. Bach's Magnificat (BWV 243) with the Asturias Symphony Orchestra and Dalinda in George Frideric Handel's Ariodante with Alan Curtis and Il Complesso Barocco on a European tour including Vienna, Paris, Amsterdam and London and recorded for Virgin Classics.

Recent opera highlights include Morgana in G.F. Handel's Alcina for La Monnaie, Brussels and Dutch National Opera with Christophe Rousset; Despina and Lisa in La Sonnambula at the Liceu Barcelona; Lisettein in La Rondine for the Royal Opera, Covent Garden; Drusilla at Teatro Real Madrid, the Liceu, Théâtre du Capitole Toulouse and Theater an der Wien, where she has also sung Satirone and Minerva/Amore in Il ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria; Oscar in Un ballo in maschera at La Scala, Milan with Riccardo Muti; Antonio Vivaldi's Farnace and Satirone in Cavalli's La Calisto for Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and Torroba's Luisa Fernanda with Washington National Opera and Plácido Domingo. In July 2013, she made her debut at the Royal Opera House, performing Lisette in La Rondine, with Angela Gheorghiu and has since returned to sing Despina in W.A. Mozart's Così fan tutte..

Plans this season and beyond include Drusilla in Claus Guth’s production of Monteverdi's L’incoronazione di Poppea at Theater an der Wien with Jean-Christophe Spinosi; Princesse Eudoxie in Olivier Py’s production of Halévy's La Juive for Opéra de Lyon and Daniele Rustioni; Zerlina in Claus Guth’s production of W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni with Dutch National Opera and Marc Albrecht; Despina in W.A. Mozart's Così fan tutte in Jan Philipp Gloger’s production for the Royal Opera, Covent Garden and in concert with Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia di Roma, both with Semyon Bychkov; the title role in Guth’s production of G.F. Handel's Rodelinda for Teatro Real, Madrid and Ivor Bolton; Gilda in Verdi's Rigoletto at Teatro Municipal de Santiago de Chile and Lisette in Puccini's La Rondine, Servilia in W.A. Mozart's La Clemenza di Tito and Fiorilla in Rossini's Il Turco in Italia, all with Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse.

She has recorded Ariodante by G.F. Handel, conducted by Alan Curtis with Joyce DiDonato, Falstaff conducted by Arrivabeni with Ruggero Raimondi, or Luisa Fernanda, at the Teatro Real in Madrid.
