The Romanian bass, Dan Popescu, studied at Liceul de arta ''Hariclea Darclée'' in Braila (1993-1997). He studied at Universitatea de Muzică din Bucureşti (University of Music in Bucharest) - Singing with a tenor «international career and University Professor Ionel Voineag, and Stage Choregraphy (opera) with Stage Directors Cristina Cottescu and Hero Lupescu - graduating in 2003. In July 2000, he attended master-class of interpretation with the baritone Ionel Pantea (Majk - Budapest, Hungary). Awards include: prizes: 2nd Prize at Haricleea Darclee National High School Singing Competition, Braila (1997); "Martha Joja" Prize at "I. Perlea ", Slobozia (2001); Participation in the International Singing Competition in Verviers, Belgium (2007).
Dan Popescu made his debut at the prestigious George Enescu International Festival in Bucharest in 1998, singing the role of role in in Wagner's Parsifal with Gürzenich-Orchester Köln conducted by Günter Neuhold. During his years of study he was also noticed in the tours of the Philharmonic George Enescu in Sicily singing the role Tiresias in Igor Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex conducted by Alessio Vlad and collaborating with the National Orchestra of Radio Bucharest in W.A. Mozart's Great Mass in C minor and Schubert's Bb Mass conducted by Horia Andreescu. At the end of his studies, he became a soloist in the ensemble of the Brasov Opera House (2001-2011). Since 2011 he is a freelance opera singer. Since 2013, he has been soloist / permanent collaborator at National Opera Iasy, Romania.
Dan Popescu has worked with Schlote Konzertdirection of Salzburg, interpreting between 2003 and 2013 the roles of Mephistopheles in Charles Gounod's Faust, the roles of Lindorf, Coppelius, Dapertutto and Dr. Miracle in Offenbach's Tales of Hoffmann, the title role in Donizetti's Don Pasquale, Raimondo in Lucia de Lammermoor, Oroveso in Norma, Basilio in Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia , Prince Gremin in Eugene Onegin, Il Commendatore in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni, Colline in Puccini's La bohême, Ferrando in Verdi's Il Trovatore or Ramphis in Aida. He has performed in touring roles in countries such as Austria, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Canada or Norway. In 2016, he performed in France and Switzerland as Father in the creation of AMOK (François Cattin, Orianne Moretti). His performance was widely welcomed by critics.
Dan Popescu is regularly invited to perform in the Baroque repertoire or in the vocal-symphonic repertoire. He has been heard in J.S. Bach's Osterkantate, Wachet auf, Ruft und die stimme, J. Haydn's Die Sieben worte des Erlösers am Kreuze, Reinhard Keiser's Markus-Passion, W.A. Mozart's Requiem, Bruckner's Great Mass in D, César Franck's Mass in A, Verdi's Requiem, Gabriel Fauré's Requiem or L.v. Beethoven's Symphony No. 9.
Dan Popescu has performed in such venues as the National Orchestra of Bucharest Radio, Primavera Lirica Altea in Italy, Iseum Savariense in Hungary, Carl Orff Hall in Munich, Szeged International Opera Festival in Hungary, National Theater of Novi-Saad in Serbia, Theater of the Suisse Romande, Théâtre de l’Odéon de Marseille, the Opéra Municipal de Bastia, National Opera Iasy or Opéra de Reims.
Recently Dan Popescu was Sarastro in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte at Brasov Opera as well as Donizetti's Don Pasquale. Still at the Brasov Opera, he was Frank in Strauss' Die Fledermaus. His upcoming engagements include the roles of Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte, Il Commendatore in Don Giovanni and the bass solo part in Beethoven's Missa Solemnis for full recordings of the Tempus Record Collection. In March he will be Ramphis in Aida at the Iasi Opera House. He will then return to the Brasov Opera to take on the roles of Don Pasquale, Sparafucile, Don Basilio and Dr. Doolitle (My Fair Lady). He currently lives in Brasov, Romania. |
