Adam Plachetka (Bass-Baritone)

Born: 1985 - Prague, Czech Republic

The Czech bass-baritone, Adam Plachetka, was educated at the Conservatory of Prague. In addition to his many national competition victories, he won First Prize at the Antonín Dvořák`s International Vocal Competition.

In 2005 Adam Plachetka made his debut at the National Theatre in Prague, since when he has appeared in Prague as Don Giovanni, Figaro in W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, Nardo in W.A. Mozart's La finta giardiniera, Argante in Rinaldo and Guglielmo in W.A. Mozart's Cosí fan tutte, among others. For the Prague State Opera, he sang Papageno in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte and Don Basilio in Il barbiere di Siviglia.

In 2007 Adam Plachetka made his debut at the Salzburg Festival as Pompeo in Benvenuto Cellini conducted by Valery Gergiev. He also appeared there as Hajný in Rusalka, Antonio in Le nozze di Figaro and Masetto in Don Giovanni). In 2009 he took part in David Alden's production of La Calisto as Sylvano at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. In September 2010, he became a member of the Ensemble of the Wiener Staatsoper. After his debut as Schaunard in La bohéme, he moved on to roles such as Don Basilio, Melisso in George Frideric Handel’s Alcina, Masetto and Don Giovanni in Don Giovanni, Dulcamara in L'elisir d'amore, Figaro, Guglielmo, Publio in W.A. Mozart's La clemenza di Tito, Mustafá in L`Italiana in Algeri and Alidoro in La Cenerentola.

Adam Plachetka’s guest engagements include also appearances at Seoul Arts Center (Ping in Turandot and Argante), Opéra de Nice (Hajný in Rusalka), Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich (Sylvano in La Calisto), Pražské jaro, Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels (Nardo), Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London (Masetto in Don Giovanni), Musikverein in Vienna, Festpielhaus Baden-Baden (Guglielmo), Opéra Comédie Montpellier (Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro), Glyndebourne Festival, Deutsche Oper and Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin and at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan.

Adam Plachetkahas performed under the baton of such conductors as Alain Altinoglu, Marco Armiliato, Bruno Campanella, John Fiore, Asher Fisch, Valery Gergiev, Friedrich Haider, Daniel Harding, Jakub Hrůša, Patrick Lange, Louis Langrée, Alessandro de Marchi, Marc Minkowski, Riccardo Muti, John Nelson, Tomáš Netopil, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Robin Ticciati or Franz Welser-Möst.

Engagements in the 2012-2013 season and beyond include Guglielmo in W.A. Mozart's Cosi fan tutte with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra conducted by Robin Ticciati, J.S. Bach’s B minor Mass (BWV 232) with Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Riccardo Muti, the title role in W.A. Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro for Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Houston Grand Opera and at the Salzburg Festival, the title role in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni for the Deutsche Oper Berlin and his debut at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Adam is also engaged to make several appearances at the Metropolitan Opera New York.

Adam Plachetka has taken part in recordings for Arte, Arthaus Musik, Česká televize, Český rozhlas, Deutsche Grammophon, Mezzo, Naxos, Orfeo, ORF and Supraphon. He released a solo CD of ‘Handel’s Oratorio Arias’ with the Czech Ensemble Baroque, conducted by Roman Válek in 2012. He was awarded the prestigious title of ‘Artist of the Month’ for February 2009 by Musical America
