Sonja Philippin (Soprano)

Born: Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany

The German soprano, Sonja Philippin, started playing the recorder at the age of 5, then moved on to the flute three years later, winning a number of prizes with that instrument at the "Jugend musiziert" competition. While at secondary school, she also continued her flute studies, not beginning her vocal training until she was 20. One year later, she began studying music at the Augsburg Conservatory. An artist extremely well-known to Munich audiences, Daphne Evangelatos, took charge of her vocal training. In July 2000 she concluded her studies with an academy diploma and passed examinations in both voice and flute.

Sonja Philippin is a much sought-after soloist on the concert platform, singing just about every imaginable musical style, with a particular fondness on her part for modern music. She made a stellar appearance, for example, in September 2000 at the "Musicades Lyons" in Arnold Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire. Even then, she was a member of our "Concert Chorus" of the Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks, which is to say "the reserve forces". Soon thereafter she auditioned and won a temporary position replacing a colleague who was on maternity leave. After another audition she became a regular member of the core choral group starting with the beginning of the 2002-2003 season.
