The American soprano and voice teacher, Abigail Sparling Pena, obtained her Bachelor of Music degree in Classical Voice Performance (2000-2004), her Certificate of Vocal Pedagogy (2009-2011) and her Master of Music degrees Classical Voice Performance from New York University. He primary teachers have included Carolann Page, W. Stephen Smith and Camille Gifford.
Abigail Pena lives and works in Austin and has performed in both opera and recital in New York City, San Francisco, Austin, Honolulu, New Jersey, Austria and Italy. She has appeared with the Hawaii Opera Theatre, New Jersey Opera Theater, Stefaniensaal in Graz, Austria, Skirball Center for the Performing Arts in New York City, New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Count Basie Center for the Arts, Blaisdell Concert Hall in Honolulu and Teatro della Muse in Ancona, Italy.
Abigail Pena served as Adjunct Voice faculty at New York University (2009-2011). She currently serves as Assistant Professor of Voice at Concordia University in Austin Texas and had previously (since August 2015). At Concordia she has performed in recital and served as a soloist in J.S. Bach's Magnificat (BWV 243) , Gabriel Fauré's Requiem, and W.A. Mozart's Vespers Solennes de Confessore, K. 339 with the Concordia University Choir & Concordia Singers. She is the Director and Coordinator of the Concordia Young Voices Competition, and as a clinician, she has served on the panel for the Texas Music Teachers Association All-State Competition. As a teacher she believes that each voice has its own distinctive beauty. It is only by shedding our emotional and technical masks that we can discover our vocal identity and truly express ourselves to an audience. A vulnerable singer is one of the most powerful communicators, and our technique is only meant to serve what it is that we truly want to say. In addition, she is Private Voice Instructor at Westlake High School/West Ridge Middle School (since September 2013) and maintains a private voice studio at her home in Round Rock where she enjoys spending time with her husband, two sons, and rescue dog Frankie. |
