The Italian soprano, Nicoletta Panni, was a granddaughter of the famous baritone Giuseppe de Luca (1876-1960), the daughter of his daughter Wally De Luca Panni. She received her training at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome by Giannina Arangi Lombardi.
Nicoletta Panni entered the stage for the first time in 1957 in Triest as Blanche in Dialogues Carmélites by Francis Poulenc. As a lyric soprano she appeared successfully on the big Italian stages, including Milan’s La Scala, at which she made her debut in 1962 as Euridice in Orpheus by Gluck. At the Piccola Scala she participated in the re-performance of Antonio Vivaldi’s La fida ninfa. At the Teatro Fenice in Venice she sang in 1961 likewise Euridice, in 1967 the Countess in W.A. Mozart's Nozze di Figaro, at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples in 1962-1963 Euridice and in 1975 Micaela in Georges Bizet's Carmen. At the Teatro Regio in Turin she could be heard often in the years 1961-1971, in roles as Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi and as Liu in Turandot by Puccini. In 1962 Nicoletta Panni made guest appearance at the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona as Desdemona in Verdi’s Othello, in 1963 at the Teatro San Carlos in Lisbon as Susanna in W.A. Mozart's Nozze di Figaro.
After Nicoletta Panni’s American debut in 1962 at the Philadelphia’s Opera as Marguerite in Faust by Charles Gounod, she made in 1963 her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York as Mimi in La Bohème and as Marguerite. In 1963 she could be heard in Geneva as Micaela, in 1964 at the Opera of Chicago as Zerline in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni and as Micaela, in 1965 in Baltimore as Leonore in Troubadour. At the Opera of Rome she appeared as a guest in 1965 as the Countess in Nozze di Figaro, at the Opera House of Nice in 1965 as Alice Ford in Falstaff, at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna in 1966 as Mélisande in Pelléas et Mélisande and as Olga in Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Mädchen von Pskow, at the Teatro Verdi in Triest in 1966, 1969 and 1973 as Emma in Khovantchina by Mussorgsky among other things. In 1964 she appeared at the Teatro Comunale in Florence as Mimi, in 1965 at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino as Ninetta in La gazza ladra by Rossini, in 1966 in the Italian first performance of Ferruccio Busoni’s Die Brautwahl, which she sang again in 1969 at the Opera of Rome. Further guest appearances in 1969 in Genoa, where in 1970 she sang Giulietta in Hoffmanns Erzaehlungen, in 1970 at the Festival of Aix-en-Provence as the Countess in W.A. Mozart's Nozze di Figaro, in 1971 at the Festival in the Roman Hot Springs of Caracalla as Liu in Turandot. She had also important successes in the concert hall. Her career as a singer came to ending toward end of the 1970’s.
