The American tenor, Stephen Oosting, received the Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from Michigan State University. He participated for two summers in choral programs with Robert Shaw at Oakland University. He received a Performer’s Certificate and his Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance and Literature from the Eastman School of Music. He has also studied abroad with Peter Pears at the Aldeburgh School in Great Britain and with Margarethe von Winterveldt, the teacher of Fritz Wunderlich, in Berlin, Germany.
Beginning his teaching career at Lansing Community College teaching music theory, ear training, music appreciation, fundamentals of music, men’s and women’s glee clubs, concert choir, voice and voice class, Stephen Oosting has since concentrated on voice teaching and allied subject areas, such as repertoire and diction, teaching at a number of colleges and universities, including Lehigh, Olivet, Wagner, Nazareth, Upsala, the Eastman School, William Patterson, and now Montclair State University.
Stephen Oosting has performed extensively in both opera and concert work. He has sung more than thirty roles with opera companies around the country, appearing in leading roles in Don Giovanni, Magic Flute, Così fan tutte, La Bohème, Madame Butterfly, Gianni Schicchi, Turandot, Barber of Seville, La Traviata, Die Fledermaus, Turn of the Screw, Peter Grimes, Angelique, L‘Enfant Prodigue, Banq Ban, Il Re Pastore, L’infedelta delusa, Die Meistersinger, two separate roles in Transformations, and the world premiere of Seduction of a Lady. He has also sung in the leading tenor roles in Gilbert & Sullivan's H.M.S. Pinafore, Gondoliers, and Princess Ida.
His concert appearances here and abroad include those with the New York Philharmonic, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Grand Rapids Symphony, Madeira Bach Festival, Aspen Music Festival, Amor Artis, Riverside Choral Society, Oratorio Society of New Jersey, and many others. His concert performances include the major song cycles of Schubert, Schumann, Benjamin Britten, Finzi, William Walton, and L.v. Beethoven. Solo appearances include Bach's major choral works, L.v. Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Missa Solemnis, Christ on the Mount of Olives, B. Britten's St. Nicholas, Cantata Misericordium, Nocturne, Serenade for Tenor, Horn & Strings, Dvorak’s Stabat Mater, Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah and St. Paul, George Frideric Handel’s Messiah, Belshazzar, Joshua, Judas Maccabeus, and Acis & Galatea, Haydn’s Creation and Seasons, Mozart’s C minor Mass and Requiem, Rossini’s Petit Messe Sollenelle and Stabat Mater, Kurt Weill’s Berliner Requiem, and Verdi’s Requiem.
Stephen Oosting has recorded for the RCA, Newport Classic and Albany labels. He is also a frequently performed composer whose works include an opera, Crossings, an oratorio, Resurrection, several masses, and many anthems. |
