The English baritone and clarinettist, Jake Muffett, studied at The King's School Grantham (Class of 2011); He graduated from the University of York with a Bachelr of Arts (Hons) in Music (2011-2014) and holds an ABRSM Licentiateship in vocal performance. He is currently studying on the Artist Masters course in vocal performance at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London (2014-2016), where he receives vocal tuition from John Evans. His studies are generously supported by the Behrens Foundation, the Tillett Trust, the Grantham Music Club and Grantham Choral Society. In September 2016 he progressed to the Guildhall’s prestigious opera programme, and continue his studies with John Evans (2016-2018).
Recent roles of note include Count Almaviva in W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni, and Sid in Benjamin Britten's Albert Herring. His most recent operatic role was Noye in B. Britten's Noye’s Fludde conducted by John Lubbock in Oxford in October 2015.
As a soloist Jake Muffett is an experienced singer of the core oratorio repertoire including George Frideric Handel's Messiah and J.S. Bach's Passions and Haydn’s The Creation, etc. He has appeared with choral societies in the Midlands and the North of England. He has also appeared as a soloist with the University of York Chamber Orchestra where he performed John Adams' The Wound Dresser. He also has performed a great deal of contemporary solo and choral repertoire which include premiers of new compositions by PhD students and works by composers such as Michael Finnissy and Karlheinz Stockhausen, etc. He recently made his international concert debut in Versailles where he performed as soloist in Monteverdi's Vespers with Sir John Eliot Gardiner, the English Baroque Soloists and the Monteverdi Choir. The performance of Carmina Burana with The Really Big Chorus at the Royal Albert Hall in July 2016 marks his London concert debut in a major venue and he is very much looking forward to performing such an excellent work with the group. Jake is currently part of the 2016 Glyndebourne Festival Chorus.
Jake Muffett has previously been a member of the Genesis Sixteen choral training programme run by Harry Christophers and Eamonn Dougan. Having recently completed his apprenticeship with the Monteverdi Choir (Director: John Eliot Gardiner), he now sings with them as a regular member and appears with the group in concerts across Europe and America.
As well as a singer, Jake Muffett is a keen clarinettist and has played with a variety of orchestras and ensembles, including the University of York Symphony Orchestra, University of York Baroque/Classical Ensemble and Chimera Ensemble (specialising in contemporary music), as well as running his own wind chamber ensemble the York Wind Soloists. Playing the versatile combination of clarinets, saxes, flute and oboe, he can be heard in instrumental concerts in London as well as musical theatre productions. He currently lives in London, England. |
