Jan Morávek (Bass-Baritone)

Born: April 4, 1979 - Prague, Czech Republic

The Czech baritone, Jan Morávek, started singing at the age of 5 at DPS Radost Praha at ZUŠ Šimáčkova in Prague 7. There he also studied recorder, then flute and guitar. He started systematic singing training in 1996 privately with Jaroslav Horáček. After graduating from the Gymnázia Jana Keplera in Prague, he studied at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University (journalism, unfinished) and singing at the Prague Conservatoire since 1997, where his teachers were Profesor Dr. Miloslav Pospíšil and Antonín Švorc. He then continued his studies at the Prague HAMU with Miloslav Podskalský, which he graduated from in 2008. In 2010 he won the 1st prize in the category "OPERA - Men" and several others awards at the Antonín Dvořák International Singing Competition in Karlovy Vary.

In the 2003-2004 season, Jan Morávek played the title role of Figaro in W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro (directed by F. Drs and P. Charvát) at the Municipal Theater in Karlovy Vary. In opera studies at the Conservatory and HAMU, he performed in many title and minor roles - Papageno and Sarastro in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Agenor and Hypolytés in Milhaud's Ancient Opera Miniatures, Antonio and then Count Almaviva in W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, Podkolesin in The Marriage by Bohuslav Martinů and Comedy on the Bridge by the same composer. He performed a minor role as Filibert (G. Rossini: Signor Bruschino) at the important opera festival in Wexford, Ireland in the autumn of 2008. At the Prague State Opera (2009, director Griffiths) he created two small episodic roles (Youth I, Restaurant waiter) in the critically acclaimed production of Benjamin Britten's Death in Venice.

From January 2012, Jan Morávek has been permanent guest soloist in the opera of the Silesian Theater in Opava, where he has so far played the roles of Zurga in Pearl Hunters by Georges Bizet (premiere - February) and G. Germont (G. Verdi: Traviata, April). From January 2012 he is also and guest at the F.X. Šalda Theatre in Liberec.

In addition to opera, Jan Morávek is also engaged in concert activities - he has performed solo parts in works by W.A. Mozart (Requiem, Krönungs Messe in C major, Spatzenmesse), J. Haydn (Nelsonmesse), L.v. Beethoven (C major), George Frideric Handel (Messiah), J.S. Bach (Christmas Oratorio, Magnificat), Charpentier (Te Deum), Gabriel Fauré (Requiem), Dvořák (Te Deum, D-Dur Mass), Jan Dismas Zelenka (Te Deum, Missa dei Filii, I Penitenti al Sepolcro del Redentore), Martinů (Otvírání studánek), in autumn In 2006 he played the part of Rafael / Adam in Haydn's Creation (director M.Valášek). A year later, Eliáš (again M. Valaášek) had the opportunity to sing the title role in Felix Mendelssohn's oratorio.

In the autumn of 2007, Jan Morávek co-performed at W.A. Mozart's academic concerts (Cosí fan tutte - Guglielmo), which were staged and conducted by conductor Tomáš Netopil. He received an offer from the Prague Spring International Music Festival to organize his own recital as part of the morning festival matinee, this recital took place in May 2012.

For the Multisonic label Jan Morávek recorded bass parts in the unknown masses of Jakub Jan Ryba (Missa Solemnis in C, Missa 2nda in F) and in the premiere recording of Jíří Ropek's Credo. In 2010 he recorded a bass part in W.A. Mozart's Requiem for Marcophon. He made the premiere recording of Requiem by the Czech composer W.E. Horák (2007) for Czech Radio.

Jan Morávek also regularly collaborates with the Capella Regia ensemble (artistic director Robert Hugo), which specializes in historically informed interpretations of Czech sacred works of the pre-classical period. He was also a member and soloist of the world-famous Prague Chamber Choir (PKS) from 2003 to 2010, with which he undertook concert tours to almost all European countries, Lebanon, South Korea and Israel and where he had the opportunity to meet on stage. with such personalities as Claudio Abbado, Gerd Albrecht, J. Bělohlávek, Joyce DiDonato, J.D. Floréz, D. Gatti, V. Kassarova, Zubin Mehta, R. Palumbo, C. Rizzi, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Peter Schreier, and many others. In 2008-2010 he was at the same time the manager and production of this group.

Jan Morávek's wife is Lenka Morávková Krejčová, psychologist.
