Kilian Mooney (Tenor)

Born: Kingston, Rhode Island, USA

The American tenor, Kilian Mooney, holds a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from the University of Rhode Island and a Master's in Vocal Performance from the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Kilian Mooney is sought out as a chorister, soloist, and teaching artist throughout Boston. Shortly after moving to Cambridge in the fall of 2012, he became known for his eagerness to perform chamber works, from early music to contemporary. Most memorably, in 2014, he joined the cast of Longy's Coffee Cantata Project, an advanced chamber ensemble that combined teaching artistry, historically-informed performance practices, and interactive audience experiences to present J.S. Bach's hilarious secular cantata (BWV 211) in the form of a miniature opera buffa. He is deeply passionate about enriching communities with music and has established himself as a certified Teaching Artist, known for seeking new ways to connect audiences and students with classical music.

Kilian Mooney performs with several choral groups in the Boston area, including Renaissance Men, Labyrinth Choir and Cappella Clausura. He travels home regularly for engagements with the Providence-based early music ensemble, Ecclesia Consort, and he has sung with Boston Midsummer Opera and Opera Providence as well. In May of 2014, he participated in the inaugural year of the Nahant Music Festival, where he performed as a vocal apprentice, singing the role of Donald in Douglas Moore's Gallantry and the tenor soloist in J.S. Bach's Cantata BWV 12. In 2015 he returned to the Nahant Festival for its second season, again as a J.S. Bach's soloist, and this time premiering a role in Sleeping Beauty, a new opera by Francine Trester. He has also performed at the Newport Music Festival in Newport, Rhode Island, and the Lucerne Music Festival in Lucerne, Switzerland.

Currently, Kilian Mooney lives in Somerville, Massachusetts. He studies with Ryan Turner of Emmanuel Music, and can be herd every Sunday morning in the music ministry at the First Baptist Church of Lexington. He has shaped the minds and talents of young musicians in our community through his teaching with the education outreach programs of both Cantata Singers and the Handel and Haydn Society, rewarding work to which he occasionally returns as a guest rehearsal conductor and as a musicianship instructor. He teaches general music and chorus full-time at Saint Peter's School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In addition, he teaches adults through his position as assistant director for Sharing a New Song, a cultural exchange choir in Belmont, Massachusetts. Kilian frequently returns to the University of Rhode Island to speak on the art of singing and the importance of educating young singers, a calling that is near to his heart.
