The American soprano and music pedagogue, Deborah Montgomery-Cove, studied at Deep Creek High in Chesapeake, Virginia . She obtained her Bachelot of Music degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro; her Master of Music degree and Doctoral studies from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She had Vocal studies with Carol Webber, Charles Lynam, Lindsey Christiansen, Grace Wilson and Judith Oas. Collaborative work with Charis Dimaras, John Wustman, David Lutz, Ralph Zitterbart and Norman Shetler. Opera direction with David Lefkowich, Gary Race, Richard Getke, Adelaide Bishop and Nicholas DiVirglio. Contemporary Commercial Music workshops with David Sabella-Mills and Level 1 certification with Jeanie Lovetri through the Somatic Voicework. Her honors include a state finalist in the NATSSA Vocal Competition, finalist in the WGN Auditions of the Air Competition and a winner in the Cleveland Art Song Festival which included master-classes with Elly Ameling, Gérard Souzay and Dalton Baldwin.
A widely experienced recital, oratorio, and opera artist, soprano, Deborah Montgomery-Cove has sung with such companies as Virginia Opera Association, C. W. Post Summer Opera Festival and Ithaca Opera Association. Her roles include Adele in Die Fledermaus, Blonde in Abduction from the Seraglio, Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute, Rosina in the Barber of Seville, Cunegonde in Candide, Despina in Cosi fan tutte, and Susanna in the Marriage of Figaro. She has appeared with the West Virginia Symphony, Syracuse Symphony, North Carolina Symphony Orchestra, Greensboro Orchestra and Cayuga Chamber Orchestra. Repertoire includes Samuel Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915, Johannes Brahms' Requiem, George Frideric Handel’s Messiah, the Haydn Creation, J.S. Bach’s Cantata Jauchzet Gott (BWV 51) and the Mozart Mass in C minor.
Deborah Montgomery-Cove made her Carnegie Hall debut with Mid-America Productions in Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah in 1989 and presented a solo recital at the Liederkranz Foundation in New York City in May of 1991. In the spring of 2005 she was the soprano soloist in Orff’s Carmina Burana at Avery Fisher Hall with the Ithaca College Choir and Orchestra. In the fall of 2010 she was a soprano soloist in J.S. Bach's B minor Mass (BWV 232) which toured in Washington, DC and Philadelphia with the Ithaca College Choir and Orchestra. International performances include a recital at the Irish World Music Centre in Limerick, Ireland in 2005, a guest teaching appointment in Hamburg, Germany at the Stage School for Music in 2000 and a recital at the Mauerbach Festival in Vienna, Austria with Norman Shelter in 1992. In the fall of 2000 she recorded a CD with the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra of Boyz in the Wood, an original version of the Little Red Riding Hood story by Grant Cooper.
Formerly a member of the faculty at Appalachian State University, University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire and Northern Michigan University, Deborah Montgomery-Cove is currently Professor of Voice (Performance Studies) at the Ithaca College: School of Music in New York. She currently serves as President of the Central New York Finger Lakes Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. |
