The Monadnock Chorus (= MC) is a volunteer, non-profit organization with the purpose of performing choral works in the Monadnock Region of New Hampshire.
The Monadnock Council of Churches launched the Monadnock Chorus in 1959. The Chorus was originally led by Dr. Joel B. Hayden of The Meeting School in Rindge. Upon Joel B. Hayden’s retirement 14 years later, the Reverend Noel Sokoloff, and Jocelyn and James Bolle of Monadnock Music provided leadership to the chorus until 1976. Leadership of the Chorus then passed to David E. Brandes, head of Franklin Pierce College Performing Arts Program and graduate of the New England Conservatory and Boston University. In its last 19 years the Monadnock Chorus has been ably led by Dr. Carroll Lehman of Keene State College.
The Monadnock Chorus presents its members with the opportunity to sing some of the most beautiful music ever written. The Chorus also give its audiences the chance to hear this wonderful music performed live right in our own geographical area. The chorus is celebrating its 50th season in 2008-2009. Since its foundation in 1959, the Chorus' goals have always been:
- To provide area residents an opportunity to learn and perform some of the world's most beautiful choral music.
- To provide the opportunity for residents of our region to enjoy choral works performed live in their immediate area.
- To reach out to the local communities by presenting choral music at schools, community organizations and other venues. The Chorus likes to give back to the communities in response to their welcome support.
The Monadnock Chorus obtains its financial support from member dues, concert ticket sales, private and corporate donations, grants from the New Hampshire Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts, the Goyette Fund, the Boote Fund, and other cultural grants and special fund-raising events. Private and business contributions and ticket sales represent the major portion of total income. |
