Paweł Michalczuk (Bass)

Born: Tarnobrzeg, Poland

The Polish bass, Paweł Michalczuk, is a graduate of the Vocal and Acting Faculty of Stanisław Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdańsk in the class of Professor Leszek Skrla (2014-2017). He recently graduated with honors from the Master’s degree course in the class of Dr. hab. Robert Gierlach at the Frederic Chopin University of Music in Warsaw (2017-2019).

Paweł Michalczuk began his musical journey in the Polish National Youth Choir, with which he sang in Poland and abroad during many international festivals, such as Wratislavia Cantans. Their repertoire included K. Szymanowski’s Stabat Mater, Symphony No. 3 - Song of the Night, Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 2 in B-flat major ”Lobgesang” Op. 52, or Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 “Symphony of a Thousand”. He also performed at the Portuguese Summer Choral Festival in Lisbon and the concert Edward Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius conducted by Paul McCreesh.

On the stage of the Academy of Music in Gdańsk, Paweł Michalczuk sang the solo parts in such works as H.H. Jabłoński’s Nec temere, nec timide, S. Moniuszko’s Litanie Ostrobramskie, and W.A. Mozart's Requiem. Equally noteworthy is his performance in the production of R. Wagner’s opera Tannhäuser during the 20th Kraków Opera Summer Festival.

Paweł Michalczuk's co-operation with the Baltic Opera began already when he was an undergraduate student. That is where he gained stage experience, singing in G. Verdi’s Otello and Nabucco, as well as in S. Moniuszko’s Straszny dwór (“The Haunted Manor”). During this period, he performed the solo parts in such opera productions as Ściąga z opery (“Opera Cheat Sheet”, as Méphistophélès from Charles Gounod's Faust), Opera Tu! Tu! (Skołuba from S. Moniuszko’s Straszny dwór), S. Moniuszko’s Verbum Nobile (as Serwacy), and the world premiere of K. Knittel’s Sąd Ostateczny (“The Final Judgment”, as Tsar Peter the Great). On the stage of the Świętokrzyska Philharmonic, he played the part of Krušina in B. Smetana’s The Bartered Bride. In July 2018 he gave a recital of Frédéric Chopin's songs in Paris, at the Chopin au Jardin festival.

For 3 years, Paweł Michalczuk has been an active member of the Chorakademie Lübeck, an international ensemble of promising soloists, with which he gives concerts in Europe and all over the world. The repertoire of the ensemble includes W.A. Mozart's Great Mass in C minor (performed at Rheingau Musik Festival in 2017), the world premiere of Tan Dun’s Buddha Passion (at the Dresdner Musikfestspiele, New Vision Art Festival in Hong Kong, and during a tournée in continental China), concerts and recording of R. Wagner’s Götterdämmerung in Hong Kong, and the performance of Zoltán Kodály's Psalmus Hungaricus in Alte Oper Frankfurt.

In April 2019, Paweł Michalczuk made his debut on the stage of the Polish Royal Opera as Dameta in Alessandro Scarlatti's Scene Buffe, which marked the beginning of his collaboration with the Institution during which he performed lead roles as Leporello in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni, Garibaldo in George Frideric Handel's Rodelinda or Uberto in La serva padrona by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi. He currently lives in Warsaw, Poland.
