The Italian soprano, Eva Mei, graduated from the Cherubini Conservatory in Florence in 1989. In 1990 she won the Catarina Cavalieri Prize at Vienna's Mozart Competition for her Konstanze (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), followed by her successful debut at the Wiener Staatsoper with the same role.
In Vienna Eva Mei sang following roles as well: Donna Anna, Alcina, Haydn's Euridice, Schubert's Luitgarde, Violetta and Contessa di Almaviva. Engagements followed in Zürich (as Alice Ford), at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, and at the Staatsoper Berlin. In 1993 she debuted at the Milan Scala as Amenaide in Tancredi. Here and in Genova, Bologna, and Munich she sang - highly acclaimed by the audience - Norina in Don Pasquale, at the Rossini Festival in Pesaro the role of Fanny in Il Cambiale di Matrimonio, in 1996 Berenice in L'Occasione fa il ladro and in 1997 in Sofia in Il Signor Bruschino.
Eva Mei gives performances at the most important opera stages like: Amsterdam, Budapest, Genf, Palermo, Vienna, Zürich, Berlin, Rome, Turin, Venice, Tokyo, Milan, Munich, Essen, London, Paris, Brussels, Cagliari etc. Her repertoire comprises furthermore: Lucia di Lammermoor, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Der Schauspieldirektor, Turandot, Carmen, La Sonnambula, Il Truco in Italia, Le nozze di Figaro, Der lustige Krieg, Falstaff, Norma, Zaide, La Finta Giardiniera, and many others.
Besides her extensive activities on the opera stage she is also renowned for her appearances on the concert stage: She sang in L.v. Beethoven's Missa solemnis at the Salzburg Festival, George Frideric Handel's Resurrection at the Teatro alla Scala, Rossini's Petite messe solennelle (with Wolfgang Sawallisch), W.A. Mozart's Requiem at the Accademia Santa Cecilia in Rome, L.v. Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 and Strauss' Vier letzte Lieder at the Musikverein Vienna, Bruckner's F-Minor Mass with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and many others.
Eva Mei's discography includes Don Pasquale, I Capuleti e i Montecchi and Tancredi, under the baton of Roberto Abbado, and two recitals of Bellini, Rossini and Donizetti Arias (BMG), Il re pastore with Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Kleine Messen KV 65, KV 109 and KV 275 by W.A. Mozart, L.v. Beethoven's Missa Solemnis, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi's Stabat Mater conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt (Teldec), Norma with Riccardo Muti (EMI) or G.F. Handel's Cantate (Teldec).
