The Israeli soprano, Claire Meghnagi, studied at the Rubin Academy of Music in Tel Aviv and in Boston and New York. Teachers include Efrat Ben-Nun, Carole Haber and Lillian Watson. She received scholarships from the America-Israel Cultural Foundation, the Israel Vocal Arts Institute, IMERIS and the New England Conservatory. Claire has represented Israel in the prestigious BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition in 2009, where she sang with the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera with great success.
After her debut as Tullia in Bononcini's Il trionfo de Camilla in Boston, Claire Meghnagi performed Le Feu/La Princesse in L'enfant et les sortilèges, The Granddaughter in The Rat Laughed for Israeli Chamber Orchestra, Zerlina in Don Giovanni for Haifa Symphony, Despina in Così fan tutte, La Bergère in Armide, Prima Cercatrice in Suor Angelica for Israeli Opera, and covered First Innocent in The Minotaur for Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
One of Israel's most exciting young singers to emerge in recent years, soprano Claire Meghnagi has been in particular demand for her interpretations of the Baroque and classical music, especially works by J.S. Bach, George Frideric Handel and W.A. Mozart.
Claire Meghnagi made impressive series of debuts at the world's most prestigious Venues in 2007, including the Barbican and Alice Tully Hall, with Les Arts Florissants and William Christie at their Jardin des Voix concert tour. For her performance at the Lincoln center the New York Times wrote "Claire Meghnagi had the most strikingly operatic sound, in terms of projection, power and suppleness, qualities she put to superb use..." She performed in numerous opera houses and festivals, including Finnish National Opera, Opera Comique and Cite de la Musique in Paris, The Israeli Opera, Theatre de Caen, Reinsberg Opera Festival in Austria, Israel Festival, Aix-en-Provence festival and in The Infernal Comedy alongside actor John Malkovich on tour in North America.
Her operatic repertoire includes Cleopatra G.F. Handel’s Giulio Cesare in Egitto, Galatea in G.F. Handel’s Acis and Galatea, Aci in G.F. Handel’s Aci, Galatea e Polifemo, Dorinda in G.F. Handel’s Orlando, Euridice in Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice, La Musica in Monteverdi’s L'Orfeo, Night/The Plaint in Purcell’s Fairy Queen, Susanna in W.A. Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, Despina in W.A. Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Zerlina in W.A. Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Pamina in W.A. Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte.
Claire Meghnagi regularly performs a vast concert reperotire, as well as lieder and contemporary music. Works performed include G.F. Handel's Messiah, W.A. Mozart's C minor mass, Gustav Mahler's Fourth Symphony, Johannes Brahms' Deutsches Requiem and Francis Poulenc's Gloria, and her debut with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Felix Mendelssohn arias. She has performed at the Musikverein in Vienna, Berlin Philharmonie, London's Wigmore Hall and the Barbican, The Lincoln Center, Palais de beaux arts in Brussels, Auditorio Nacional de Madrid and Lisbon's Gulbenkian, among others. One of Israel's leading performers of Bach's music, she sang under the baton of Baroque specialists William Christie, Andrew Parrott, Laurence Cummings, Jonathan Cohen, Howard Arman and Martin Haselböck. She sang J.S. Bach's Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244) for Israeli Opera.
Claire Meghnagi’s debut CD features Israeli art songs. She has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3, ARTE, Radio France and the Israeli Broadcasting Authority. She enjoys reading, yoga and long walks. |
