The American tenor, Nathaniel (Nate) McEwen, is a 2009 graduate of Vernon-Verona-Sherrill and an OACC Senior Scholarship winner. He began his vocal training with the late soprano Judith Kellock at Cornell University, from which he graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degrees in music and biological sciences. Since beginning his vocal training at Cornell, he has sung in master-classes led by renowned soprano Renée Fleming, American composer Jake Heggie, noted tenors Ian Bostridge and Anthony Dean Griffey. While at Cornell, he was the tenor soloist in the Chorus and Glee Club’s performances of Sergei Rachmaninov's All Night Vigil, Haydn’s Harmoniemesse, and J.S. Bach’s Cantata BWV 153, as well as in the Chorale’s performance of Benjamin Britten’s Rejoice in the Lamb, and Schubert’s Mass No. 4 with the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra (CCO). A former member of the Glee Club, he can be heard singing a solo on their most recent CD release, "Last Letter Home". He is the recipient of two Cornell departmental awards for outstanding work in music and was invited to sing selections from Robert Schumann's Dichterliebe at a concert for university donors in Alice Tully Hall in New York City. He was also a participant in the world premiere of music from Indian composer Vanraj Bhatia’s opera, Agni Varsha, in Jackson Heights. He participated in SongFest in summer 2013 in Los Angeles, where he sang for the esteemed collaborative pianists Graham Johnson and Martin Katz; and at Si parla, si canta in Urbania, Italy.
Nathaniel McEwen obtained his Master of of Music degree from Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. He is currently a doctoral student in Vocal Performance and Literature at Eastman under the tutelage of Professor Jan Opalach. At Eastman, McEwen has been the tenor soloist with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Cayuga Chamber Orchestra, Cornell Symphony Orchestra, Eastman School Symphony Orchestra, and Eastman Philharmonia, as well as with the Rochester-based choirs First Inversion and Voices. He has sung as tenor soloist in performances of J.S. Bach's Magnificat (BWV 243) with Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, has sung the part of Uriel Haydn’s Die Schöpfung with the Eastman Philharmonia (in English) and with the CCO (in German), Haydn's Harmoniemesse, Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 2 (“Lobgesang”), George Frideric Handel’s Messiah, Schubert’s Mass No. 4, S. Rachmaninov's All Night Vigil, and B. Britten’s Rejoice in the Lamb, and he has covered the tenor solos in F. Mendelssohn’s Elijah with the Rochester Oratorio Society. He has been featured multiple times in the Eastman School of Music: Bach Cantata Series. He has also sung the roles of Albert Herring in B. Britten’s Albert Herring (October 2014; his operatic debut), Peter Quint in B. Britten’s The Turn of the Screw (November 2016) and Don Basilio in W.A. Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro in recent Eastman Opera Theatre productions. While in Italy, made his international operatic debut as Gherardo in Puccini's Gianni Schicchi. He collaborated with his colleagues in the complete presentation of J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244) in March 2017, conducted by David Chin. |
