Simon McEnery (Tenor)

Born: England

The English tenor, singing teacher and composer, Simon McEnery, studied singing and jazz at the Guildhall School of Music and Music and Drama (1989-1994), and has an Master of Arts in musicology from Southampton University.

Since then, Simon McEnery has sung in opera choruses across Europe, including Le Châtelet Opera Paris, Oper Frankfurt, De Vlaamse Oper Antwerp and Ghent, and Opéra de la Lorraine, Nancy. Closer to home, he sings regularly with Welsh National Opera (WNO), having sung now in Cav & Pag, Meistersinger, Aida, Parsifal, Khovanschina, Fliegende Holländer, William Tell, Arnold Schoenberg's Moses und Aron, Alexander Nevsky, Tristan und Isolde, L.v. Beethoven's Fidelio, Otello, Lohengrin, Turandot, Don Carlos, and Mazepa. He has sung with Garsington Opera and Grange Park Opera, Wexford Festival Opera, Pimlico Opera and the BBC Singers, among others. He has sung at the Albert Hall on many occasions, as well as at the Royal Opera House and the Coliseum. He has appeared in Sweeney Todd (Pimlico Opera/Wormwood Scrubs); Wonderful Town and South Pacific (both Grange Park).

With his actor/singer colleague Audrey Palmer, and her husband David Rhind-Tutt on piano, Simon McEnery has collaborated on two revues, It's De-Lovely!, a celebration of Novello, Coward, Porter and Gershwin, and a show based around the songs of the First World War, Keep The Home Fires Burning. He also performs in revue and cabaret with Elizabeth Sweetnam. He occasionally sings in oratorio, but has a particular fondness for contemporary choral music, and love the opportunity to work on new pieces.

As a composer Simon McEnery has written a number of choral works; over a hundred songs; and incidental music for theatrical shows. His volume of 20 Collected Songs was published by Red Rust Music Ltd in March. As a conductor, musical director and chorus master, he has worked for Salisbury Playhouse and Winterbourne Opera, and he is the director of the Salisbury Chamber Chorus.
