Gwendolen Martin (Soprano)

Born: England

The English soprano, Gwendolen Martin, was brought up in Wiltshire and won a silver medal for singing from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in 2002. She graduated from Worcester College, Oxford, in 2006 where she was a choral scholar and sang as a soloist with Ensemble Isis, Oxford Sinfonietta and New Chamber Opera. She received a scholarship to complete a Postgraduate Diploma in singing at Trinity College of Music in 2009, studying with Hazel Wood and Robert Aldwinckle. She currently studies with Mary King.

Gwendolen Martin now enjoys a career as a soloist and ensemble singer, performing with the Monteverdi Choir (Director: John Eliot Gardiner), Gabrieli Consort (Director: Paul McCreesh), Polyphony (Director: Stephen Layton), Philharmonia Chorus Professional Singers Scheme and The Marian Consort (Director: Rory McCleery). Recent solo performances include Alex Campkin's Cycles of Time (Ampersandance Dance Company), J.S. Bach's Magnificat (BWV 243) (Winchester Music Club), premiere of Samantha Fernando's Half Moon (Pop Up Circus-WORD launch), Haydn's Nelson Mass (Dauntsey's School Choral Society), Gabriel Fauré's Requiem and Chansons (Barnes Choral Society), George Frideric Handel's Messiah (Salford Choral Society), Alessandro Scarlatti, Pepusch and G.F. Handel Cantatas (Musica Poetica), whilst operatic roles include Philidel, Nereid, Venus and Honour in Purcell's King Arthur, Chorus in Georges Bizet's Carmen (Opera Comique), Chorus in Weber's Der Freischutz with Monteverdi Choir, Mauxalinda in Lampe's Dragon of Wantley, Pamina in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Gretal in Engelbert Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretal, Echo in Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos (Longborough Festival Opera), Belinda and Second Woman in H. Purcell's Dido and Aeneas, Cupid in John Blow's Venus and Adonis.
