Christopher Maltman (Baritone)

Born: 1970 - England

The English baritone, Christopher Maltman, read biochemistry at Warwick University. He then entered the Royal Academy of Music in London in 1991, studying in the Opera course with Mark Wildman. He also studied with Sesto Bruscantini and, at the Brereton International Music Symposium, with Thomas Hampson. He won the Lieder Prize in the 1997 Cardiff Singer of the World Competition.

Recent concert engagements have included the Haydn St Nicholas Mass with the English Chamber Orchestra and Stephen Cleobury, Ralph Vaughan Williams' A Sea Symphony in the Royal Albert Hall with Vernon Handley, Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem in the Royal Albert Hall with Sir David Willcocks and R. Vaughan Williams' Serenade to Music with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Sir Simon Rattle.

Opera engagements have included Silvio for Welsh National Opera, Rusteno in Solimano and Haydn's L'Isola Disabitata for the Deutsche Staatsoper, Berlin, Tarquinius in The Rape of Lucretia at the Montpellier Festival and Gritzenko in L'Etoile du Nord at the Wexford Festival. In the 1997-1998 season he sang Raimbaud in Le Comte Ory for Glyndebourne Touring Opera, and returned to Welsh National Opera for the title role in a new production of Benjamin Britten's Billy Budd.

Christopher Maltman recently made his recital debuts at the Châtelet in Paris, the Edinburgh Festival and at London's Wigmore Hall. Next year he will appear in recital at the Hohenems and Edinburgh Festivals.

Christopher Maltman has recorded the role of Paris in Roméo et Juliette for BMG Classics, R. Vaughan Williams' Serenade to Music for Decca, Warlock songs for Collins Classics, and took part in Deutsche Grammophon's complete L.v. Beethoven folksongs project. Recent recordings include Ireland songs for Hyperion, his debut recording for the label.
