The Italian tenor, Alessandro Maffucci, studied the violin and matured while attending The Music School of Fiesole, where he studied singing under the guide of Massimo Sardi. In September 2002, he attended Peter Schreier's and Irwin Gage's master-classes dedicated to German Lied and Vocal Chamber Music repertoire at the Teatro della Pergola in Florence.
Alessandro Maffucci has affirmed himself as one of the most interesting tenors of his generation in recent years. He has performed in Italy, Switzerland, France, Malta, England, China and Romania. Thanks to a voice of particular strength and timbre, he has been able to undertake primary roles such as Calaf in Puccini's Turandot, Luigi in Puccini's Il Tabarro, Cavaradossi in Puccini's Tosca, Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly, Turiddu in Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana, Don José in Georges Bizet's Carmen, Radames in Verdi's Aida, Manrico in Verdi Il Trovatore, and Canio in Leoncavallo's Pagliacci. His interpretation of Verdi's Othello is of special importance. He performed this role several times in different operatic productions, after having made his debut at the International Festival of Music of San Gimignano in 2000 (Artistic Director Stefano Del Seta). He is one of the few tenors in the entire international sphere able to sustain the arduous role of the Moore.
Alessandro Maffucci has a deep interest in Chamber Music and Symphonic Choral. His exceptionally flexible voice brought him to approach this type of repertory with excellent results, including Gustav Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde, A. Bruckner's Messa da Requiem, W.A. Mozart's Krönungsmesse, G. Puccini's Messa di Gloria, G. Rossini's Petite Messe Solemnelle, etc. He has also performed in Peking, Bucharest and Milan, where he distinguished himself in Verdi's Messa da Requiem, and under the direction of Maestro Piero Bellugi in L.v. Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 and W.A. Mozart's Requiem.
His repertoire also extends to Vocal Chamber Music with particular attention, not only to 19th Century Italian Chamber Music (Francesco Paolo Tosti), but also and above all to Austrian-German Lieder (Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, Gustav Mahler) and the Argentine Composers of the 20th Century (Alberto Ginastera, Carlos Guastavino), which he performed since 1998 in a duet with the Italian pianist Roberto Russo.
During April and the summer of 2007, Alessandro Maffucci made a long tour of the duet which was held with numerous concerts at Pistoia, Florence, Piacenza, Barga, Borgo San Lorenzo and the tour in England (London, Reading, Salisbury, April 30/May 5). On this occasion he presented the premiere (London and Salisbury) of English composer Michael Stimpson's Dall'Alba al Tramonto, on poems from the collection Myricae by Giovanni Pascoli, devoted to the duo by the composer himself.
In 1997, he recorded Romancero Gitano by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco together with the guitar player Flavio Cucchi (CD Arc Music Edition). Together with Roberto Russo, he recorded a CD for Base Record Label and the "Liszt Institute" of Bologna (Italy). |
