The American soprano and music educator, Katy Maguire Lushman, obtained her Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music; and her Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from Westminster Choir College.
Katy Lushman is a musician, educator, clinician, and arts and community advocate in Denver, Colorado. She has taught in suburban and urban public schools, and international schools in Switzerland and China. Her posts have included: Choir Teacher at Forest Hills School District in Cincinnati: Anderson HS & Nagel MS (August 2004- June 2008); Choir/Piano/Guitar/Theory and History Teacher at Leysin American School in Leysin, Switzerland (August 2008-2010); Lower School Music Specialist / Language Support Specialist at Xiamen International School (August 2010-2011); Graduate Assistant at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey (August 2011-2013), Since August 2013, she is teaching at Denver North High School, a Title I public school. Since June 2018, she is Founder & Artistic Director of Denver Choir League
Katy Lushman regularly serves as a clinician for honor choirs and has presented sessions at conferences around issues of equity and innovation in music education. In addition to her work as an educator, she is an active vocalist in the Denver area. She is passionate about pushing the boundaries of what vocal music education is: her students regularly perform masterworks at renowned concert halls as well as collaborate with local hip-hop groups and artists of all genres. In particular, she is interested in the potential that exists to create a bridge between the traditional choral education model, of which she is a product and strong supporter, and innovative and community-oriented music making.
Katy Lushman also serves as Festival Director of Ad Astra Music Festival in Russell, Kansas since August 2016. For three weekends each July, the Ad Astra Music Festival through the Russell Arts Council colors central Kansas with classical music by integrating emerging young artists, community members, and professional musicians. Audiences have come to expect fresh, new music alongside vibrant performances of history's richest musical works of art. |
