The English baritone, Frederick Long, received a first-class degree in music from the University of Bristol, a DipRAM from the Royal Academy of Music, and furthered his training at the National Opera Studio. He is a Samling artist, a Yeoman of the Worshipful Company of Musicians, and a grateful recipient of the Donald A. Anderson award from Glyndebourne on Tour and a Sybil Tutton Award (administered by Help Musicians UK).
Noted for the musicality of his performances, alongside vivid stagecraft, Frederick Long is establishing himself as one of Britain’s most exciting and versatile young bass-baritones. Since making his debut at Glyndebourne as the Lackey in Ariadne auf Naxos, he has gone on to work at all the major opera houses in the UK including Glyndebourne Festival, English National Opera, Welsh National Opera, Scottish Opera, Opera Holland Park, Opera North and the Royal Opera, working with leading conductors including Vladimir Jurowski, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Sir Charles Mackerras and Sir Colin Davis. He has performed and covered a diverse range of roles including George Frideric Handel's Saul, W.A. Mozart's Figaro and Papageno, Schaunard in La bohème, Lieutenant Ratcliffe in Benjamin Britten's Billy Budd and Superintendent Budd in Albert Herring, Sam in Ballo in Maschera, Nilakantha in Lakmé, Lackey in Ariadne auf Naxos, Somnus in Semele.
Equally at home in contemporary repertoire, Frederick Long performed Medeiros in The Yellow Sofa for Glyndebourne on Tour, Leporello in Giovanni for Silent Opera (a digital reimagining of the original), and covered Janitor in Tansy Davies’ Between Worlds for ENO. With Royal Academy Opera he created the role of Willi Graf in the world premiere of Peter Maxwell Davies’ Kommilitonen!.
Frederick Long's wide vocal range and rich timbre sees him in demand on the concert platform across the country and abroad. Already making his name as an exponent of the Baroque masterworks of J.S. Bach and G.F. Handel, this year saw him take on two of the great romantic roles - Felix Mendelssohn's Elijah and St Peter in Edward Elgar's The Kingdom - as well as Verdi's Requiem with a chorus of two thousand at the Royal Albert Hall.
Recent performances for English Touring Opera as the Sorceress in Dido and Aeneas, Jesus in J.S. Bach's St Matthew Passion (BWV 244) and Guglielmo in W.A. Mozart's Cosi fan tutte received widespread critical acclaim.
When Long escaping work, Frederick can be found amidst the cider presses of Somerset, happily pottering about with his wife Emily and young son Ralph. |
