The American mezzo-soprano, Thea Lobo, received her High School Diploma (voice major, with honors) from Booker HS Performing Arts Department, Sarasota, Florida in 2001. In 2005 she received her Bachelor of Music in Classical Vocal Performance (academic honors, distinction in performance) from New England Conservatory in 2005, she performed solos with the Chamber Singers, Concert Choir, Bach Ensemble, and was the only undergraduate chosen to present a solo song set for the 2005 Ives Festival. In 2009 she received her Master of Music in Vocal Performance from Boston University College of Fine Arts, where she performed the roles of Third Lady in The Magic Flute and Ino in Eccles's Semele.
Thea Lobo is rapidly being recognized as a highly musical and flexible soloist and ensemble singer. She has appeared under the baton of such conductors as Harry Christophers, Martin Pearlman, Stephen Stubbs, and Helmuth Rilling, and has been featured with musical organizations including Firebird Ensemble, Chorus pro Musica, Boston Early Music Festival and Europäisches Musikfest Stuttgart.
Thea Lobo’s operatic performances include Amastris in George Frideric Handel's Xerxes, Lay Sister in Suor Angelica, Gwen in Copland's The Second Hurricane, Second Woman in Dido and Aeneas, and The China Cup in l'Enfant et les Sortileges, as well as scenes as Cenerentola, Buttercup, Dorabella, Orfeo, and Cherubino. She has worked with such composers as Felicia Sandler, Ruth Loman and Brian Robison, and has recorded original soundtracks by Marcus Staniec for Empty House Films. At the 2005 Boston Early Music Festival, she performed the modern-day premiere of Johann Mattheson's Magnificat for double chorus, one to a part, under Stephen Stubbs. She has also appeared in Sarasota 's La Musica Festival and the SoHIP and CSEM concert series, and has performed in recital series for Trinity Church, Boston Secession, the Newton Continuing Education Center, Live at the Adams, the Berkshire Choral Festival, King's Chapel, and the Newton Library. She has appeared as a soloist also with Mass Theatrica, Chorus pro Musica, and Harvard-Radcliffe Chorus.
In June 2009 Thea Lobo toured Japan performing J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244) under the direction of Joshua Rifkin. She has recently performed the roles of Orgando in G.F. Handel's Amadigi with Boston Baroque, mezzo-soprano in the world premiere of Nicholas Vines's Loose, Wet, Perforated for Guerilla Opera, L'Enfant in L'Enfant et les Sortileges with MetroWest Opera, and covered the narrator role Xiao Qing for the world premiere of Zhou Long's Madame White Snake with Opera Boston.
The Lobo’s extensive chamber music and recital experience includes appearances with the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum's Avant Gardner Series, Opera Boston Underground, The Plain Song, Handel and Haydn Society, and Emmanuel Music, which named Thea Lobo Lorraine Hunt Lieberson Fellow for the 2009-2010 season. She performs as a member of ensembles Boston Secession, Exsultemus, Cut Circle, and the Handel & Haydn Society Vocal Quartet. |
