Albert Lim (Baritone)

Born: Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Chinese baritone, Albert Lim (Traditional Chinese: 林俊), obtained his Bachelor’s Degree of Music (Honours) from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA); and his Postgraduate Diploma in Performance and Postgraduate Certificate in Performance with Distinction from the Royal College of Music. Throughout his studies, he has attained a number of scholarships including Royal College of Music (Hong Kong); Welsh Male Choir Scholarships; the Society of APA Scholarships; Guinness Flight’s Music Prizes; Exxon Energy Limited Scholarships.

Albert Lim made his debut as a soloist in 1997, performing W.A. Mozart’s C Minor Mass, K.427 with the Hong Kong Bach Choir. Since then, he has appeared regularly with the group. He has also collaborated with various vocal ensembles, namely the Hong Kong Oratorio Society, the Learners’ Chorus, as well as the Hong Kong Philharmonic. Works he has performed include: J.S. Bach’s Magnificat in D, BWV 243, George Frideric Handel's Israel in Egypt, Johannes Brahms's Ein Deutsches Requiem, Op. 45, Gioacchino Rossini's Petite messe solennelle, etc. In 2011, he was invited to perform with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, representing Hong Kong in the Shanghai EXPO. In 2012, he appeared as the featured soloist in Gabriel Fauré's Requiem with the Hong Kong Sinfonietta. Lim performed as a soloist with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra in 2013. One of his recent performances was given in conjunction with the Chinese University of Hong Kong Chorus, as part of the 330 commemoration of J.S. Bach as well as a featured event of the 2015 Singfest in Hong Kong.

Albert Lim has Lim has sung different roles in productions produced by Opera Hong Hong and Musica Viva, two opera companies in Hong Kong. Operatic repertoire he has performed include Barone in Verdi’s La Traviata (Opera Hong Kong’s production); Dancairo in Georges Bizet’s Carmen (Opera Hong Kong’s production); Gugliemo in Le Villi by Puccini (HKAPA’s production); Yakuside in Puccini’s Madamme Butterfly (Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra); Marcello in Puccini’s La Boheme (HKAPA’s production); Ben in Menotti’s The Telephone (HKAPA’s production), Figaro in W.A. Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, Papageno in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Escamillo in Carmen, and Umeya in Huang Ruo’s opera, Dr. Sun Yat Sen. In April 2007, he was invited by the Shanghai Opera House to sing the role of Dancairo in Carmen by the Shanghai Opera House under the baton of Michel Plasson. In the same year, he sang the role of Gregorio in Charles Gounod’s Romeo and Juliette in May and Johann in Massanet’s Werther for Opera Hong Kong in 2008. In March 2009, he was again invited to sing the role of Escamillo in Carmen for the HKAPA. He took the role of Sun Chuen Mou from the local-composed Zhang Bao Zai and performed in the premiere with Musica Viva at Shanghai Expo 2010 during August. He was invited by Music Viva again in 2011, Jan to do the role of Belcore in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore. During October the same year, he was again invited by Opera Hong Kong to take the role of Ume in the production of Sun Yat Sen. In May 2012, he performed the role of Escamillo and Dancairo in Carmen with Opera Hong Kong again.

A versatile singer, Albert Lim is equally at home in the pop music scene. He has shared the stage with a number of Cantopop stars, notably Hacken Lee and the Taiwanese singer, Jeff Zhang. he has also recorded music soundtracks for Walt Disney's animated movies, including Lady and the Tramp, Enchanted and Lava in Cantonese. As a devoted Christian, he has taken part in the studio recordings produced by ShareHymns Association Limited, a non-profit making Christian music organization in Hong Kong.

In 2013 Fall, Albert Lim made his appearance at Hong Kong Philharmonic orchestra’s Jockey Club Keys to Music Education Programme 2012-2013, sang excerpts of W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte.

Albert Lim is currently a singing lecturer at the HKAPA and The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Choir conductor at the Hong Kong Children’s Choir and Assistant Chorus Master at Opera Hong Kong. While keeping a busy teaching schedule, he is currently president of Aria Academy of Music, faculty member of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and Chinese University of Hong Kong, conductor at the Hong Kong Children's Choir and the assistant chorus master of Opera Hong Kong.
