The Canadian soprano, Nicole Leung, obtained her Bachelor of Music degree from the New England Conservatory of Music (2015-2019; Teacher: Jane Eaglen); and her Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music (2019-2021; Teacher: Doris Yarick Cross). She returns to the Yale School of Music as a Master of Musical Arts candidate, studying with Gerald Martin Moore on full scholarship (2021-2022).
Past engagements include Nerone in L’incoronazione di Poppea (2019) and Romilda in George Frideric Handel's Serse (2018) with the New England Conservatory Undergraduate Opera Studio, and Fiordiligi in W.A. Mozart's Così fan tutte with Long Reach Opera Workshop in Toronto (2018). Nicole Leung has also been seen in the roles of Susanna in W.A. Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro (2016) and First Spirit in W.A. Mozart's The Magic Flute (2016) with New England Conservatory’s Opera Scenes Program. She returned to SongFest in the summer of 2019 as a Young Artist, underwritten by the ArtSong Foundation of Canada, where she had the privilege of performing in curated concerts by John Musto and Jake Heggie. As a devoted interpreter of song repertoire, she was honored to receive 3rd Place in the Hal Leonard American Vocal Competition for Art Song in 2019.
The 2019-2020 season featured Nicole Leung with Yale Opera as Rosalba in Florencia en el Amazonas at the Shubert Theater, conducted by Christopher Franklin and directed by Candace Evans. She was also involved in a variety of performances, including a workshop of the world-premier opera The Snowy Day by Joel Thompson and libretto by Andrea Davis Pinkney, commissioned by Houston Grand Opera. Other performances include Lisette in La Rondine and Héro in Béatrice et Bénédict in Yale Opera Scenes Program. She was scheduled to perform the role of Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi with Yale Opera, however, due to COVID-19, performances were cancelled. In addition to operatic performances, she appeared as Soprano Soloist with Waterbury Symphony Orchestra in their W.A. Mozart's Requiem performance and as Soprano Soloist in L.v. Beethoven’s Chorale Fantasy with Yale Philharmonia.
The 2020-2021 season saw Nicole Leung in a duets and arias concert with Yale Opera, singing Lucia from Lucia di Lammermoor, and Sophie from Der Rosenkavalier and Musetta in La bohème in the Yale Opera Scenes Program. She was recently named a Tier ll semifinalist in the 2021 James Toland Vocal Arts Competition. She recently performed Morgana in G.F. Handel's Alcina with Yale Opera (March 2022) and in the Yale Opera Scenes Program as Nannetta in Falstaff, Naiad in Ariadne auf Naxos, and Comtesse in Le Comte Ory. This Spring (2022), she will sing the role of Adina in L’elisir D’amore with Yale Opera.
In addition to her operatic and song performances, she has appeared as Soprano Soloist in a variety of concert programs, including Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem (2019), Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms (2018), and Johannes Brahms’ Neue Liebeslieder (2018) with New England Conservatory Symphony Orchestra. |
