Jérôme Lejeune (Viola da gamba, Conductor)

Born: February 2, 1952 - Liège, Belgium

The German viola da gamba player, conductor and musicologist, Jérôme Lejeune, is the son of musicologist Suzanne Clercx-Lejeune and historian Jean Lejeune. He received his Bachelor of Art degree in Musicology at the University of Liège and studied viola da gamba at the Conservatoire of Brussels, in the class of Wieland Kuijken.

Since 1976 Jérôme Lejeune is professor of music history at the Conservatoire Royal de Liège. He has devoted his career to the promotion of early music (not only Baroque, but also Medieval, Renaissance, Classical and pre-Romantic) through:his radio broadcasts on the classical music channel of the Belgian radio Musiq'3: Musique Ancienne Aujourd'hui (Early Music Today) and Le Matin des Baroqueux (The Morning of Baroque). In 1980 he created the classical record label Ricercar and operated this label, which produced about 300 albums. He was also art director and producer of many records in the Walloon Baroque ensemble Ricercar Consort. He is Professor of the history of music at the Conservatoire since 1976. From 2003 to 2007 he was manager of the festival Nuits de Septembre in Liège, founded by her mother, Suzanne Clercx-Lejeune.
