The American mezzo-soprano, Sylvia Leith, obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in German from Yale University in Washington D.C. (2012-2016), where she sang the roles of Amastre in Cavalli’s Xerse, Lazuli in Chabrier’s L’étoile, Hänsel in Engelbert Humperdinck's Hänsel und Gretel, Nerone in L’incoronazione di Poppea, Marcellina in W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, Endimione in Cavalli’s La Calisto, and Télaïre in Rameau’s Castor et Pollux. Highlights from her concert repertoire include Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire, and Beethoven’s An die ferne Geliebte, and a program of medieval motets by Philippe de Vitry, which she has performed with soprano Ariadne Lih both at Yale and Fordham Universities. She earned her Master of Music degree in Voice Performance from Boston University under the tutelage of Penelope Bitzas in 2018.
Sylvia Leith continues to live and work in the Boston area. She is a versatile performer whose repertoire spans from the medieval to the contemporary, including opera, art song, chamber music, musical theatre, and cabaret. Recent performances include the title role in George Frideric Handel's Giulio Cesare in Egitto with Red River Lyric Opera, Nancy in Benjamin Britten's Albert Herring with the Boston University Opera Institute, and concerts with the Uncommon Music Festival, of which she is a founding member. She is also Alto II Section Leader at the Church of the Redeemer in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts (since October 2016). |
