"Being a sopran in the comic sense, she can entertain with her wit and humour, even when necessary ‘a bit of rough’ as she plies her art at characterization. But to be too swayed by ‘bawdy’ or ‘minstrel jesting’ would be to belie her profound skills to move and elevate with her plangent tones, soaring sweetness, artless bravura, and deep sincerity. In the best voices one hears not only ‘beauty of voice’, but also sharp intelligence, and perhaps most important of all, depth, compassion and humanity." - Anthony Rooley |
