Christiane Karg (Soprano)

Born: 1980 - Feuchtwangen, Bavaria, Germany

The -German soprano, Christiane Karg, began her musical career already in her childhood with piano, flute and dance lessons, and could soon experience in solo performances gather. She started taking singing lessons at the Dinkelsbühl College of Music when she was just 15 years old. In 1998, she was awarded the German Federal Prize for Old Music at the Jugend musiziert competition. She studied vocal performance, song/oratorio and opera/music theatre with Heiner Hopfner and later with Professor Wolfgang Holzmair at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg until 2006. She graduated with distinction, receiving the Lili Lehmann Medal as a result. During her time at the university, she spent four months in Verona as an Erasmus student. She has also attended master-classes with Grace Bumbry, Robert Holl, Mirella Freni, Marjana Lipovšek, Ann Murray and Roger Vignoles.

In concert Christiane Karg has sung soprano parts in many of the known church oratorios, including works by J.S. Bach, George Frideric Handel, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, Mozart, Haydn, Schubert and Felix Mendelssohn. Christiane is a longstanding member of the choir of the Bamberger Symphoniker, and she recently was heard with them the 23.Psalm and Wie der Hirsch schreit nach frischem Wasser. Similarly she performed in the spring of 2008 with great success the 4th Symphony of Gustav Mahler at Hamburg Laeizhalle.

Christiane Karg has particular concern in Lieder and opera recitals. After successes at the Heidelberger Frühling, the Rötting Festival and Kreuzgangfestspielen in Feuchtwangen, she was enthusiastic to appear at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival with a recital of Lieder with the title Tausend und eine Nacht ("A Thousand and One Nights"). In December, she made her debut at the Philharmonie in Cologne.

On the opera stage, Christiane Karg debuted at the Salzburg Festival in 2006 in the Mozart roles of Melia (Apollo und Hyacinth) and Weltgeistes (Schuldigkeit des Ersten Gebots), as well as performance in the summer of 2007, as Madame Silberklang in Der Schauspieldirektor. As a member of the International Opera Studio of the Hamburg State Opera since January 2007, she appeared in the last season as Papagena (Zauberflöte), Fraarte (Radamisto) and as Hirt (Tannhäuser). In April 2008 Christiane debuted at Berlin's Komische Oper in the role of Musetta in a new production of Puccini's opera La Bohème. Guest performances led her to the Salzburg State Theater, to the State Theater in Mannheim and at the Theater an der Wien, where she was heard in J.S. Bach's Weihnachts-Oratorium (BWV 248) in a production of John Neumeier.

At the beginning of 2008-2009 season Christiane Karg became an ensemble member of the Frankfurt Opera, where she will appear as Papagena (Zauberflöte), Susanna (Le Nozze the Figaro), Musetta (La Bohème) and Livia (Caligula), among others. In coming spring she is also re-invited to Theater an der Wien to sing the role of Ismene in Mozart's opera Mitridate, and she continues to appear as Musetta at the Komische Oper Berlin.

Christiane Karg was prize-winner at the International Singing Competition New Voices 2007 and in 2008 received a special award in the category of oratorio-singing at the International Singing Competition Francisco Vinas in Barcelona.
