The American soprano/mezzo-soprano and actress, Amy Justman, obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music cum laude from Yale University; her Master of Music degree in classical vocal performance from Manhattan School of Music. She studied acting with Michael Howard (Scene Study), Sally Johnson Studio-Jen Krater (On-Camera), Upright Citizens Brigade-Gavin Speiller, Zach Woods; Yale-Murray Biggs; singing with Victoria Clark, Maitland Peters, Andrew Byrne. She attended master-classes with Craig Carnelia, Adam Guettel, Dawn Upshaw, Carolann Page. She also studied dance with Francis Patrelle (Ballet, Jazz), Germaine Salsberg (Tap), Kaori Spencer, Lanie Munro (Jazz).
Amy Justman's performances have spanned the worlds of classical music, Broadway and jazz. She made her Broadway debut in the revival of Company (2006 and 2007), performing the role of Susan as well as playing piano as part of the actor-orchestra. In June 2008, she performed at Carnegie Hall in a concert version of Showboat. She recently joined her third Broadway company, the Tony Award-winning Best Musical A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder, after a six-month run of the national tour of Phantom of the Opera, where she performed both Carlotta and Madame Giry. Other theatrical credits include both the Broadway and Pioneer Theatre companies of White Christmas, Clara in the off-Broadway revival of Passion at Classic Stage Company, Heidi in Title of Show in the regional premiere at Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Shelby in The Spitfire Grill at Flat Rock Playhouse, Maria in The Sound of Music at Arrow Rock Lyceum, and three productions with City Center Encores. Her other recent concert work includes Peep Bo in The Mikado at Carnegie Hall, Cinderella and Rapunzel in Disney on Classic with the Tokyo Philharmonic, covering Kelli O'Hara in Lucky to Be Me at New York City Opera, and singing Jessie in Mahagonny Songspiel at the Ravinia Festival.
Amy Justman has been a soloist with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (Leonard Bernstein's Mass, recording on Naxos), New York City Ballet, Fire Island Opera Festival, Great Music in a Great Space, Musica Sacra, American Symphony Orchestra, Kurt Weill Fest, Berkshire Bach Society, and Natchez Opera Festival. She can be heard on the jazz recordings Songs for Pickles and Hoagy Carmichael: The Stardust Road, as well as Tania Leon's Grammy-nominated Inura.
Amy Justman has been a voice teacher at Yale University for the Shen Curriculum for Musical Theater. She lives in New York with her husband, New York Times reporter Dave Itzkoff (they were married in 2008). |
