The Swiss baritone and conductor, Raphael Jud, was born into a musical family and conducted even as a schoolboy his "own" youth choir. After the completion of primary school, he started studies of of piano, organ and singing in Winterthur. In 1987 he obtained the diploma for piano, and in 1990 singing diploma with distinction with Ruth Binder. He was repeatedly awarded the prize of the Migros-Genossen-Schaftsbundes and was a finalist at the soloist competition of the Schweizerischen Ton-künstlervereins.
After attending during a season the Opera Studio of the Opernhaus Zürich, Raphael Jud joined a postgraduate course with Kurt Widmer in Basel, graduating in 1993 with a soloist diploma. After attending master-classes with Theo Adam and John Shirley-Quirk, he has worked regularly with Margret Honig and Maarten Koningsberger. In 2003 he obtained the diploma as an orchestra conductor with Johannes Schläfli.
Raphael Jud is a sought-Lieder and oratorio singer in Switzerland and in neighboring Europe, where he appears with a large concert repertoire from early Baroque to contemporary, including major parts in oratorios by George Frideric Handel, J.S. Bach and Haydn, for example, and Felix Mendelssohn's Elias and Paulus, Janácek's Gilgamesh, and Martin's In Terra Pax.
Besides his concert activity Raphael Jud teaches solo singing at the Kantonsschule Baden and at the Musikakademie Basel. |
