The American tenor, Sidney Johnson, graduated from the Hartt College of Music with Bachelor of Music degree in Opera. He has Master of Music degree in Opera and Musicology and a Master of Art degree in Educational Ministry and Counseling. He has received many national and international awards in voice (in the second half of the 1960’s he was Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions winner). .
Sidney Johnson has been described as a outstanding tenor with a soft pliant voice, with liquid, easy production, excellent intonation, a beautiful lyric quality to his voice with an aristocratic sound which together with his refinement and poise make his interpretations exemplary. He has appeared in opera and concerts throughout the USA (five seasons with the Santa Fe Opera, as well as with the Philadelphia Lyric Opera and the American Opera Society) and in European capitals such as Vienna (with the Volksoper), Berlin, Salzburg, Paris, Venice and Tuscany. He appeared in in the NET television production of Igor Stravinsky’s Nightingale (Le Rossignol). He has sung in many oratorios in America and in Europe and has recorded on Decca with Musica Aeterna at Alice Tully Hall. Currently (2013-2014), he sings in concerts and recitals in the Portland area such as a concert version of Mozart’s La Finta Giardiniera with the Portland Chamber Orchestra. He recently sang the lead role of Elijah in Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah accompanied by Sinfonia Concertante, Novum Chamber Singers and The Oregon Chamber Singers.
Sidney Johnson moved from New York to the Portland area in 1990 to attend Western Seminary. He is presently Professor of voice at Multnomah University. While in New York City he was Professor of Voice at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, Brooklyn College (second half of the 1970’s), and served on the pastoral staff of Calvary Baptist Church. He also serves as Minister of Classic Worship at GracePoint Milwaukie. |
