Mami Iiriswa (Soprano)

Born: Mino-shi, Japan

The Japanese soprano, Mami Irisawa, completed her study of classical solo singing at the Kobe College in Japan The, in 2000, she moved to the Netherlands to study early music (from Gregorian chant to Baroque music) with Rebecca Stewart and later also with Maurice van Lieshout at the Fontys Conservatorium in Tilburg. After receiving her postgraduate diploma in this subjectshe continued in the same conservatorium, giving modal singing techniques and modal harmony, specializing in 14th-century Ars Nova and 15th-century Franco-Flemish polyphony.

Mami Irisawa gives concerts with groups such Cantus Modalis, Fala Musica, Syntagma, Musica Temprana, Chor der J.S. Bach-Stiftung St. Gallen (2008-2009) and the Schweizer Kammerchor. She sings in festivals such as the Utrecht Early Music Festival (Netherlands), the Zagreb Baroque Festival (Croatia) and the Festival of Bresice. In the last years she gave concerts in Switzerland, Germany and France and since 2011 she is member of the Zürcher Sing-Akademie. Her recordings include the Messe de Notre Dame of Guillaume de Machaut, the Mass, Magnificat and Madrigal of Christiaan van der Amijden and “Stylems” Italian music of the trecento.

Since the summer of 2006 Mami Irisawa e teaches in the Summer School of Early Music in Prachatice in the Czech Republic and in various project weeks at the Center Cantus Modalis in The Netherlands. After having taught within the Early Singing Department in Tilburg for two years, she moved in 2007 to Switzerland, where she gave lesson at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste as a guest teacher in Early Music. She curently lives in Zürich, Switzerland.
