Ensemble "Il Cimento" was founded in 1990 by baroque oboist Matthew Peaceman. The name "Il Cimento" is derived from the title of Antonio Vivaldi's Op. VIII, Il Cimento dell' Armonia e dell' Inventione. (The Hazards of Harmony and Invention)
Ensemble "Il Cimento" performs music primarily of the baroque and early classic eras. Its members, who have worked with some of the world's most prestigious Early Music ensembles, have come together to explore the manifestations of the diverse streams of influence in European music of the 17th and 18th centuries.
The musical goals "Il Cimento" has set are derived from the emphasis placed on historical style and performance practice. As is to be expected, the primary consideration is of questions about national styles, affect, articulation and ornamentation as well as historical tunings, techniques and tempi. Beyond that though, the various aspects of the cultural, sociological and political context in which the music was created are explored in order to deepen understanding of the whole. This enables "Il Cimento" to create stylistically appropriate performances that are both musically relevant and emotionally satisfying: a historically informed, modern authenticity.
Ensemble "Il Cimento " performs concerti, sonatas, and suites, as well as secular and sacred vocal works. When necessary, the ensemble expands to include an appropriate number of voices, strings and winds. |
