The English bass, Paul Hudson, studied music and singing at Huddersfield College where he gained an Open Scholarship to the Royal College of Music. In his final year there, he won the Dr Saleby Prize for Basses and was awarded a Peter Stuyvesant Scholarship to study at the London Opera Centre.
1970 marked the beginning of Pau Hudson’s long association with the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, where he became one of the youngest singers to be awarded a principal’s contract. He has since appeared in over 600 performances at the Royal Opera House as well as performing with the English National Opera, the Welsh National Opera, Opera North and houses all over the world including the USA, South Africa, Australia, South America, Japan and the Far East.
Paul Hudson’s career has placed equal emphasis on opera and concert repertoire. He has appeared both in the UK and Europe under the baton of such eminent conductors as Leonard Bernstein, Georg Solti, Adrian Boult, Louis Frémaux, Colin Davis, Groves, Gennady Rozhdestvensky and Pierre Boulez and with many of the world’s leading orchestras including the London Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Scottish National Symphony, Hallé Orchestra, Orchestra de Paris and BBC Symphony Orchestra. Appearances at the Royal Festival Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, the Barbican and other major concert venues have established Paul as a leading exponent of the bass repertoire. He is proud to have enjoyed a long association with the UK’s principal choral societies and has given numerous recitals specialising in original programmes.
Television and radio broadcasts have displayed the diversity of Paul Hudson’s repertoire which ranges from Gilbert and Sullivan, Negro Spirituals, Folk Songs and Ballads through the great classical and modern concert works. He has recorded with CBS, EMI, Decca and Deutsche Grammophon and has a number of videos on release including Lucrezia Borgia, Fanciulla del West, Pirates of Penzance and Ruddigore. |
