The English mezzo-soprano, Claudia Huckle, studied at the Royal College of Music (Foundation Scholar; Diploma of Higher Education, 2003), New England Conservatory (Presidential Scholar; Undergraduate Diploma of Music, 2005), and the Curtis Institute of Music (Professional Studies Certificate in Opera, 2006). Between 2000-2004 she worked as a street musician singing arias in Florence, Venice, Rome and Covent Garden. Claudia Huckle is a 2004 Grand final winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and a graduate of the prestigious Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program at Washington National Opera (2006-2008). She has also been a recipient of the Sybil Tutton Award (2005), a prize winner at the Palm Beach Opera Vocal Competition (2006) and the Sullivan Foundation Competition (2006), and the grand final winner of the Thelma King Award for Singers in England (2003).
In previous seasons Claudia Huckle made her debut with Deutsche Oper Berlin as the Forester's Wife in The Cunning Little Vixen, sang the Page in Salome with Santa Fe Opera (where she was Apprentice Singer Program in 2006-2007 and also covered the roles of Carmen, Third Lady and Dorabella and), The Fox in The Little Prince with Boston Lyric Opera, Zerlina in Don Giovanni with Opéra de Monte-Carlo and Irene in Tamerlano with Opera by Definition.
As a Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist, roles for Washington National Opera included Irene in Tamerlano with Plácido Domingo and David Daniels (2008), 2nd Maid in Elektra, Countess Ceprano in Rigoletto (2008), Hansel in Hansel and Gretel (2007), Kate Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly (2006), Siegrune in Francesca Zambello’s production of Die Walküre with Plácido Domingo as Sigmund and the role of Karolka in Jenufa (cover, 2007). She also performed La Ciesca, Dorabella and Zerlina in the Young Artist performances of Gianni Schicchi, Così fan tutte and Don Giovanni (2006-2007).
Since 2009 Claudia Huckle is a member of the ensemble at Leipzig Opera. In the 2009-2010 season Claudia Huckle sang the Third Lady in The Magic Flute, Singer in Manon Lescaut, Clarice/Linetta in The Love for Three Oranges, Zaida in Il Turco in Italia, Flora in La Traviata, Mércèdes in Carmen and Flosshilde in Das Rheingold with Leipzig Opera.
Claudia Huckle will make her debut at English National Opera this summer in the title role of Torsten Rasch's new opera The Duchess of Malfi. New roles for her second and upcoming season with Leipzig opera include Olga in Eugene Onegin, Hansel in Hänsel und Gretel (new production) 1st Maid in Elektra (new production) Voice from above and Flower maiden in Parsifal and Schwertleite in Die Walküre (concert performance). She will also return to English National Opera to sing Pitti-Sing in The Mikado.
Concert performances have included Mozart’s Requiem (2006) and J.S. Bach’s St Matthew Passion (BWV 244) (2005) on USA and European tours with the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists under Sir John Eliot Gardiner, George Frideric Handel’s Messiah with the Milwaukee Symphony (2006), Ann Arbor Symphony (2008) and National Symphony Orchestra, Washington DC (2007); the role of Emilia in Rossini’s Otello with Washington Concert Opera (2007) and the role of the Slave in a concert performance of Salome with the National Symphony Orchestra (2007). Claudia Huckle has also been a young artist at the Steans Institute for Young Artists at the Ravinia Festival where she performed solo song recitals (2005). |
