Benjamin Howard (Baritone)

Born: Los Angeles, California, USA

The American baritone, Benjamin Howard, obtained his Bachelor of Music degree and Musical Theatre Certificate from Northwestern University (2010-2014); and his and Master of Music degree in Voice Performance/Opera from the University of North Texas (2015-2017). In early 2019, he was named a first-place winner of The American Prize in Vocal Performance - The Friedrich and Virginia Schorr Memorial Award, 2018-2019 in the men's art song division. In addition to the Utah Festival, he has been a Young Artist at Opera in the Ozarks, SongFest, and the Idyllwild Arts Festival.

Marked as a “standout” (Chicago Tribune) and praised for his “intelligence, nuance, and heart-melting tone” (The Da Camera Society), Benjamin Howard is quickly becoming a sought-after young talent to watch. In the summer of 2019, Benjamin Howard made his debut with Pacific Opera Project, performing Pish-Tush in The Mikado. In 2018, he made his debut with Utah Festival Opera & Musical Theatre, singing Rapunzel’s Prince in Into the Woods and the Sergeant in Il Barbiere di Siviglia.

Operatic highlights include the title role in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni, the Count in W.A. Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, Ping in Turandot, Elder McLean in Susannah, Speaker in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, 1st Officer in Francis Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmélites, Connie Rivers in The Grapes of Wrath, and Prior in La Dolorosa. Musical theatre roles include Dr. Craven in The Secret Garden, Mr. Lindquist in A Little Night Music, Rabbi Einhorn in Amazing Grace, and Mr. Mayor in Seussical. As a concert soloist, Benjamin Howard has performed with such organizations as the Trinity Baroque Orchestra, Wall Street, New York Baroque Incorporated, Bach Vespers at Holy Trinity, Abilene Philharmonic, and Chicago Chamber Orchestra. His credits as a soloist include J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244), Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem, Maurice Duruflé's Requiem, Rossini’s Stabat Mater, Finzi’s In Terra Pax, and Rodrigo’s Ausencias de Dulcinea.

Based in New York City, Benjamin will begin the 2022-2023 season as a soloist in collaboration with Concerts at Saint Thomas, presenting a selection of Ralph Vaughan Williams' Songs of Travel in late October. This past spring, he made his debut with Bronx Opera, singing Publio in W.A. Mozart's La Clemenza di Tito. He was thrilled to make his major recital debut in October of 2021 at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Orange County, California. He joined acclaimed pianist Armen Guzelimian and the Auryn String Quartet for an all-Haydn program. An avid choral lover, he was recently appointed baritone/bass in the world-renowned Saint Thomas Choir of Men & Boys in New York City. Proud member of the American Guild of Musical Artists.
