The English baritone, cellist and viola da gamba player, Andrew Hopper, studied composition at the Birmingham Conservatoire, obtaing his Bachelor of Music degree with Honors (2008-2012). Never one to specialise (and already an accomplished ‘cellist and clarinettist), he took every chance to seek out new musical opportunities. His interest in the compositional elements of early music turned into a love of the performance of it, and he began to study Baroque cello in his final year, before teaching himself viola da gamba the year after.
Andrew Hopper was soon invited to join the fledgling K’antu Ensemble (July 2012), and has since appeared with them at venues including St. Endellion, Newbury, Birmingham Symphony Hall, Cadogan Hall, Gottingen, and live on Radio 3. He has organised many early music concerts, including a small-ensemble performance of J.S. Bach’s Matthew Passion (BWV 244) in 2013. He is also an experienced professional choral singer, having appeared with the CBSO Chorus (2009), Armonico Consort (Director: Christopher Monks) and Ex Cathedra (Director: Jeffrey Skidmore) amongst others. He was a choral scholar at St. Martin-in-the-Fields (2014-2015), regularly sangs at Birmingham and Worcester Cathedrals, and was a dep at a variety of London churches. He briefly took up a permanent position at St. Batholomew-the-Great, before moving to the Netherlands.
Andrew Hopper moved to Den Haag, Netherlands, in September 2015 in order to take up a place at the Royal Conservatoire, on the early music voice course (expected to finish in 2019). He studies with teachers including Rita Dams, Michael Chance, Peter Kooy and Robin Blaze. He is already in demand as a choral and solo singer in the Netherlands. Since August 2015, he leaves in The Hague, the Netherlands. |
