The German bass, Ulrich Hielsche, moved in 1951 with his family to Cottbus (DDR) and fled from there in 1954 to Düsseldorf. Here he completed a very thorough musical and singing studies at the Robert Schumann-Konservatorium with Philip Göpelt. He received additional training with the singing pedagogues Paul Lohmann in Wiesbaden and Francesco Carino in Düsseldorf.
In 1967, Ulrich Hielsche got his first engagement at the Opera House of Essen. Since 1974 he is a member of the Opera House of Cologne; he has benn engaged simultaneously at the Staatsoper Hamburg and at the Staatstheater Hannover, He appeared as a guest at he opera houses of Wuppertal and Frankfurt a.M., the Theaters of Kiel and Freiburg, and the Staatsoper Breisgau. Guest engagements have taken him to the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf-Duisburg, the Staatsoper of Stuttgart, the Wiener Staatsoper, the Theaters of Nuremberg, Bielefeld, Gelsenkirchen and Lübeck, the Staatstheater Schwerin (1994 in Don Quichotte by Massenet; 1995 as Pogner in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), the operas of Antwerp and Ghent (1984-1985). He has appeared as an opera and concert singer in Holland, Belgium, France, Switzerland and in Bogota (Colombia), among others.
His extensive stage repertoire include over 60 roles, such as the the title role in Le nozze di Figaro, Osmin in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Leporello in Don Giovanni, Alfonso in Così fan tutte, Sarastro and the Sprecher in Die Zauberflöte, Rocco in Fidelio, Kaspar in Freischütz, Baculusin Freischütz by Lortzing (Cologne, 1994-1995), Pater Guardian in Verdi's La forza del destino', the title role in Falstaff, Mephistopheles in Faust by Charles Gounod, Kezal in Bartered Bride, Don Pasquale in the eponymous opera by Donizetti, Bett in Zar und Zimmermann by Lortzing, Baculus in Wildschütz, Plumkett in Flotow's Martha, Daland in Fliegenden Holländer, Hagen in Götterdämmerung, Gurnemanz in Parsifal, Ochs in Rosenkavalier (Kiel, 1992), Hauptmann in Alban Berg’s Wozzeck, Ollendorf in Millöcker’s Bettelstudent and Zsupan in Zigeunerbaron by J. Strauss. In 1991, he appeared in Cologne in the German premiere of the opera Der Meister und Margarit by York Höller.
In the concert hall, Ulrich Hielsche appeared as a soloist in oratorio works by J.S. Bach, L.v. Beethoven, George Frideric Handel, Mozart, Haydn, Felix Mendelssohn, Johannes Brahms and Bruckner. He is also an excellent interpreter of Lieder and Ballads in a broad repertoire
