Peter Harrower (Bass-Baritone)

Died: 1988 - Georgia, USA

The American bass-baritone, Peter Harrower, went in 1956 to Europe for what was to become three triumphant years of appearances with the Rome Teatro dell'Opera, the Vienna Volksoper, the Orchestra of Santa Cecilia of Rome, and the orchestras of Radio-Television Italy. Returning to America, he sang various roles with the Lyric Opera of Chicago and was featured in cantata and requiem performances all over the country. In 1978 he performed at the Baldwin-Wallace College Bach Festival. Peter Harrower was married with the lyric soprano Irene Callaway. The appeared together numerous times.

Peter Harrower was a professor of music at the Georgia State University, School of Music. After his death, his widow, Irene Callaway Harrower, a renowned vocal coach, founded in 1988 the Harrower Summer Opera Workshop. More than 740 talented young artists have studied and sung together during the summer workshop since its inception. Irene Callow Harrower continued to participate in the workshop as a clinician through the summer of 2007. She currently resides in Atlanta and maintains a private voice studio.
