The American mezzo-soprano, Theodora Hanslowe, graduated from Cornell University (Bachelor of Arts) and received an Artist Diploma from Peabody Conservatory. She completed apprenticeship programs with Santa Fe Opera and Cincinnati Opera and was a 1992 recipient of the Richard F. Gold Career Grant and a Theodore Presser Study Grant.
Theodora Hanslowe made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1994 as Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, sang Stephano in Roméo et Juliette there in the 1995-96 season and will return to sing Rosina in the 1997-1998 season. Other engagements for 1997-98 include her New York recital debut at Weill Recital Hall, performances of the title role of La Cenerentola with L'Opéra de Montréal and performances of Dorabella in W.A. Mozart's Cosi fan tutte with Boston Baroque. This summer, in addition to her Riverbend CSO debut, Ms. Hanslowe sings Rosina at the Strasbourg Festival in France.
Theodora Hanslowe made three important debuts in the 1995-96 season: in the title role of La Cenerentola with Florida Grand Opera, as Isabella in L'Italiana in Algeri with Los Angeles Music Center Opera, and in the title role of Massenet's Chérubin with Opéra de Monte-Carlo. She has sung Rosina with Opera Theater of St. Louis, Glimmerglass Opera, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Portland Opera and the New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv. She has sung La Cenerentola with the Deutsche Staatsoper Dresden, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf, and the Washington Summer Opera. Theodora Hanslowe sang the Composer in Ariadne auf Naxos for her debut with Buenos Aires' Teatro Colòn in 1993.
Recent orchestral engagements include a return to the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center to appear as soloist in Leonard Bernstein's Arias and Barcarolles. Theodora Hanslowe has also appeared in the Arnold Schoenberg version of Gustav Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde with members of the Süddeutscher Rundfunk Stuttgart. She made her Carnegie Hall debut in the 1996-1997 season with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra in Berlioz's Les nuits d'été and also appeared with them as Zerlina in Don Giovanni. Further highlights of last season include a program of Mozart arias with The Hanover Band on tour throughout the USA, her debut with the CSO at Music Hall in works by Bruckner and Felix Mendelssohn and appearances with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in a program of Monteverdi's Il Ritorno d'Ulisse in Patria and the USA premiere of Benjamin Britten's The Rescue of Penelope. |
