The Swedish soprano, Margareta Hallin, studied at the Royal College of Music, Stockholm.
Margareta Hallin became a member of the Royal Opera there in 1956. In 1957 and 1960 she appeared at Glyndebourne as the Queen of Night. Her repertory at that time included Gilda, Violetta, Konstanze, Zerbinetta and George Frideric Handel's Alcina. In 1959 she created the Blind Poetess in Blomdahl's Aniara, repeating the role at Edinburgh the same year and at Covent Garden in 1960. In 1961 she sang Anne Trulove in the Swedish premiere of The Rake's Progress, in 1964 she created Therese in Lars Johan Werle's Drommen om Therese, and in 1986 she took part in the premiere of Hans Gefors's Christina, all in Stockholm. While retaining the vocal agility of a coloratura soprano, she undertook parts of a more dramatic nature: Leonora (Il trovatore), Aida, Elisabeth de Valois (Don Carlos), Mathilde (Guillaume Tell) and Donna Anna, as well as the four heroines of Les contes d'Hoffmann. In 1973 she sang the Queen Mother in G. J. Vogler's Gustaf Adolf och Ebba Brahe at Drottningholm, where she also sang Clytemnestra in Haeffner's Electra (1991). |
