Ruth Golden (Soprano)

Born: USA

The American soprano and music pedagogue, Ruth Golden, obtained her Bachelor of Att degree from the University of California, Berkeley; her Master of Music degree from the University of Southern California; her Ed.D.C.T. at Teachers College, Columbia University (in progress). Her Honors/Awards include: Recipient of Van Lawrence Fellowship Award, The Voice Foundation; Recipient of William Sullivan Awards; Recipient of Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions Award; Recipient of San Francisco Opera Merola Opera Program Scholarship; Outstanding Master Student: Vocal Arts at the University of Southern California.

Ruth Golden was a leading soprano at the New York City Opera from 1985 to 1991. Under the direction of Beverly Sills, Golden appeared at New York City Opera as Mimi in La bohème, Marguerite in Faust, both Pamina and First Lady in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Zerlina in Don Giovanni, and a variety of operetta heroines in The Student Prince, The Mikado, and The Merry Widow, among others.

In concert, she appeared in addition to Live from Lincoln Center, at Carnegie Hall (with the Oratorio Society of New York), Alice Tully Hall, Weill Recital Hall, Symphony Space, and Merkin Concert Hall. Additional performances in opera and concert have taken her to the Washington Opera, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Kennedy Center, Los Angeles Music Center, Ravinia Festival, Aspen Music Festival, Music Academy of the West, and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, University of Southern California, and University of California. From 1995 to 2001, she appeared as artist/faculty with Martin Katz and Graham Johnson at Songfest, hosted in Southern California.

Adding thirty-one of the fifty USA states to her itinerary, Ruth Golden also appeared internationally with the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto, Orchestra Pasdeloup in Paris, Chartres, and Rheims, the Prague Philharmonic in Prague, and the Orchestra Royale of Madrid in both Madrid and Lisbon. In 1997, she appeared as artist/master teacher in concerts and master classes throughout South Korea.

In recent seasons, Ruth Golden has appeared in recital/master classes for the Juilliard School, Indiana University, McGill University, The Chautauqua Institution, Belmont University with Regina Resnik Presents, Hebrew Union College, and the University of California, Irvine during the John Harbison Residency. She Golden opened the 1999-2000 season appearing with Marilyn Horne, Martin Katz, Donald McGinnis, and Jean Barr in Los Angeles for the University of Southern California's Koldofsky Memorial Benefit Recital.

Since September 1995, Ruth Golden is Professor of Music and Director of Vocal Studies at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. She is also on the faculty of the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia. She was Guest Teacher at the Julliard School from January 1997 to January 2000. Her specialities: Voice Performance, Vocal Pedagogy, Song Literature, Opera History and Performance. Her students have gone on to study and perform with top companies, institutions and programs, including the Metropolitan Opera, Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, New York City Opera, Minnesota Opera, Glimmerglass Opera, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, San Francisco Opera Merola Opera Program, Fort Worth Opera, Lake George Opera, Sarasota Opera, Chautauqua Institution, Manhattan School of Music, New England Conservatory of Music, Opera Institute at Boston University, Music Academy of the West, Lake Placid Summer Vocal Institute, and Utah Festival Opera, among others.

In addition to appearing as guest artist/master teacher, Ruth Golden remains busy as an adjudicator. During the past few seasons, she has worked with over 2,000 high school students in New York, in clinics and master-classes sponsored by New York OffStage. At the request of Dalton Baldwin, Golden served on the panel for the 1999 Poulenc Plus Competition, served as mistress of ceremonies for the PBS telecasts of the 1997-1999 MacAllister Opera Awards, and served three seasons on the panel for the Jenny Lind Awards. She has presented classes for the Julliard School, McGill University, University of California, New York Singing Teachers Association and the National Association of Teachers of Singing. She is an active member of the adjudicating panel for the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.

As a member of the Koch International Classics family of distinguished recording artists, Ruth Golden's discography includes works of Delius, Warlock, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Rodrigo, and Samuel Barber. Also recorded for Koch is a disc of songs by Erich Korngold with Dalton Baldwin, pianist. Recordings: “The Best of Barber” (Decca Records, 2000); “Silent Noon: The Songs of Ralph Vaughan Williams” (Koch International Classics, 1993); “My Own Country: The Songs of Peter Warlock” (Koch International Classics , 1992); “Twilight Fancies: The Songs of Frederic Delius” (Koch International Classics, 1992); “MasterClass with Elizabeth Schwarzkopf” (PBS Special).
