The English mezzo-soprano, Lucy Goddard, graduated with distinction for her Masters in Vocal Performance at the Royal Academy of Music in London in July 2011, where she was awarded the S and M Eyres Wilson Scholarship and supported by the Josephine Baker Trust. She previously read Modern Languages at Girton College, Cambridge, where she was a choral and instrumental scholar, and was awarded the Rima Alamuddin Award for singing. She also played the violin in National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and its Italian equivalent, L'Orchestra Giovanile Italiana, and spent a year studying at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole, Italy. She received generous support of the Kathleen Trust and the Seary Trust.
Lucy Goddard is fortunate to have performed as a soloist in some of London's most prestigious venues including the Wigmore Hall, Cadogan Hall and St John's Smith Square. She is ideally suited to zwischenfach operatic roles, and in particular to those found in W.A. Mozart operas. Beyond opera, she is also a keen interpreter of contemporary music; she is a core member of EXAUDI vocal ensemble, with whom she regularly premieres works by exciting new composers, and Opera Erratica, a contemporary opera company focusing on improvisation and physical theatre.
Recent solo engagements include Annio in La Clemenza di Tito with Midsummer Opera, Dorabella in Così fan tutte with Seastar Opera, mezzo soprano solos in J.S. Bach's Mass in B Minor (BWV 232) at Snape Maltings, Aldeburgh, Telemann's Die Tageszeiten with Solomon's Knot in Bern and in the London Handel Festival and the Cambridge Early Music Festival, Triptych with Opera Erratica as part of the Spitalfields Festival in Wilton's Music Hall and the Print Room, London, David Lang's the little match girl passion in Hackney with Opera Erratica, the world premiere of Michael Finnissy's Gesualdo: Libro Sesto at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (broadcast on BBC Radio 3) with EXAUDI, and a Wigmore Hall recital with EXAUDI, featuring works by Machaut, Heinz Holliger, Scelsi and Finnissy (broadcast live on BBC Radio 3). Forthcoming engagements include Meg Page in two different productions of Verdi's Falstaff with Black Cat Opera (directed by Phillip Guy Bromley) and with the Lambeth Orchestra (conducted by Christopher Fifield), an opera gala concert with Black Cat Opera, and David Lang's the little match girl passion with Cryptic Theatre in King's Place in London and at the Sound Festival in Aberdeen.
Other solo performances of note include J.S. Bach's Cantatas at the Wigmore Hall with the Academy of Ancient Music (solos and chorus) and Antonio Vivaldi'sGloria with the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields at the Cadogan Hall. Lucy Goddard has also performed as a soloist in Cage Four Solos for Voice at the Théâtre de Ville, Châtelet, in Cassidy A Painter of Figures in Rooms (world premiere and BBC broadcast) at the Purcell Room, and in Béla Bartók's Village Scenes (solos and chorus) conducted by Oliver Knussen at the Aldeburgh Festival, all with EXAUDI. |
